As an international student in the United States, it was always important for me to understand the ways in which US employers recruit undergraduate students. The OCR workshop organised by the STARR Career Center provided me with just that opportunity.
On Wednesday, 15th of October, I attended the event that provided us with the information how employers come to Baruch to recruit students. In the beginning they introduced us to the program and also made us register for the OCR program. This followed with a presentation showing us how to use the STARR Search on their website. For most of the workshop, they explained us the steps of applying for the program using their website, which helped reduce the complexity of using their website features to connect with recruiters.
The workshop discussed about writing the resume which is the most crucial part of the process. This included how to format the resume and what to include. In order for our resumes to catch the employers attention, I learned that, we need extra curricular activities along with a strong GPA. I learnt that small errors in our format can cause the employers to not even consider reading our resume.
Another important topic in the workshop stressed about the interview- how to get there, what and what not to do in the interview, and how to make a good impression.
Overall, the workshop was helpful giving me the insights of how recruitment works in the United States and what I’ll need to be doing over the course of the next few years.
