It was the 8th of August,2017 when I first got to hear about a club named FES from my friends after class and that they would be having their first general interest meeting at 12:30. Without second thoughts, I knew that was the one club I was probably looking for- a club that had both the disciplines of Economics and Finance.
These two subjects have generally brought me to New York City, the financial capital of the world. Even back just an year ago I would have had never thought, that after an year I’d be here. Since I needed to start somewhere, I chose Baruch College as my gateway to that industry. Over the course of that year, I learnt about the great club opportunities at Baruch that can shape me for the industry but I didn’t know their names.
Now that I was at Baruch College, I needed to seize the opportunities, and I attended the GIM of FES at Baruch. What fascinated me, in the very beginning , about the people in the club was their strong sense of professionalism- business attire and bold appearances. The event started and the members introduced themselves and the industry for which they’ll be shaping us through a mentorship and an internship program. As for me, a freshman, I can only join the mentorship program which undoubtedly will help me understand the corporate finance world. It will help me develop skills and understanding of the disciplines way ahead of selecting my major, meaning that the club activity will not only prepare me for the industry but also for my classes. On the other hand, networks- this program will definitely help me meet new people and also people from the industry which is very much important for students after they graduate. It was more important to me as I am new to the city and the country.
The event progressed and refreshments were served- New York style Pizza and drinks. The members, interestingly, ended the event in a rather fun way- we had to build a tower using spaghetti sticks and place a marshmallow on top of it. The tallest of all towers would be winner. The challenge did not seem as difficult at first as it got when we and our team started making it. The small task, was my first lesson at the club- team work and team bonding. As the event ended, I made new friends from the club and was determined about joining the mentorship program and I soon had an interview due at the club.
