Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DFD

MoMA

On September 29, I went to the Museum of Modern Art. I had to go for a object description project that I had to do for my art history class. When I first entered, I got my ticket which had a cute picture on the back, the tickets were free since I had a CUNY id. I walked around for a long time looking at random art wondering which to choose from. In the end I found a artwork that was the US flag, although it looked like a simple flag, it had many details ingrained into the art. I would probably visit the museum again if a new exhibit opens up, I would love to see what the museum have the next time I visit.

Joining a Club and participating in activities

I decided for this post/workshop to join a club, and especially one I’ve been really interested in lately, Hillel. I heard a lot about it before I started college, and after the recommendation of one of my friends who joined, I stopped by to sign up and see what was going on. There was a lot going on inside, and as I walked in a really nice girl invited me to come in an join them for their weekly session on Wednesday at 12. she was telling me that every Wednesday at 12, a bunch of girls have a learning session with one of the leaders on topics relating to either the holiday coming up, or just about topics relating to Jewish girls, weekly Torah (bible) portion…etc. They also have free pizza which was also nice. The week I went they were discussing topics of forgiveness right before Rosh Hashana. I really enjoyed the time I was able to stay there because I felt really included and involved, but unfortunately I don’t think I would continue coming as I have class at 12:25 and I wouldn’t be able to stay for the entire learning session, and I feel it isn’t fair to those who can to have to deal with me leaving after less than 20 minutes. They did add me to their chat where they update us on what events they have going on, and just a place to get to talk with a bunch of the girls who are a part of the club. I’m really excited to see and join other activities they have throughout the semester!

I wasn’t able to take a picture at the session, but I have the text message from the chat inviting us to come join.

Oh well, I know I did this a little late, but boy it’s been a long day of pure writing. Anyway, I went yesterday to some meeting of a club. But then I saw all those people going in very well dressed, while I was just as casual as ever. All of them seemed professional, I didn’t. And in my mind, it was a big alarm telling me it wasn’t gonna be fun. It was almost 1 pm, and the meeting had started at 12:45. I said to myself forget it. I looked quickly in baruch maps, and saw SOCA ( Student Organization for Caribbean Appreciation ) and said, well, Colombia kind of is in the Caribbean, so why not? I ran to the fourth floor, room 4-120, and got just in time. They guy there was really cool, knew how to make people laugh. He quickly showed the most important members of SOCA, and quickly went to the icebreaker, the part I liked the most. You has to say your name, school year (fresman), where you live, ethnicity, and a fun fact or nah. Everyone went even the people who came late. I had to quickly think of my fun fact, and I just said that i for stuck in a refrigerator, because I wanted to see if it was true that your tung would get sticked to cold metal. Well putting that aside, the guy talked about other future events, and they even had a game to test howith much you knew about the Caribbean. The questions were so trivial that I didn’t even bothered after the second one. I didn’t know anything unfortunately, but man I’m glad I went to another place, and that I enjoyed what they did there, though they again brought pizza and thats something I don’t eat, but well, it couldn’t be perfect of course. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. The Metropolitan Museum of Art

On Thursday, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I needed to go to a museum for two classes: Art History and Global History and it was an option for one of the blog posts for Freshman Seminar. I went to the second floor to look at Renaissance art for Art History and walked around for a while. I liked one painting so I decided to use that one for the assignment. I sat there for about half an hour writing as many details as I could. I walked around for a while to actually look at the museum. I went to the Ancient Mesopotamia exhibit and looked around. I went to the Ancient Egypt exhibit for Global History. I saw the Temple of Dendur  and a group of people rehearsing a dance or something. I saw a lot of statues and hieroglyphs. I spent a few hours there trying to find something for the assignment. I found a few potential objects to write the assignment about. The museum is very large and I didn’t see all of its exhibits. It was interesting and I learned a lot. I’ll probably visit the museum again so I can see the rest of the exhibits.

The Met

Yesterday I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. It is a very cool place. Upon walking up to it, I was amazed by the sheer size of the building, and the quality of the artwork on it. When you enter you find yourself in the greek exhibit, where there are multiple statues from ancient greece. It’s amazing to be in the same room as so much history. Knowing that these statues I stood in front of were crafted by artists in ancient times was an otherworldly feeling. The ancient egypt section was also an amazing thing to see. There were multiple tools and pottery from ancient Egypt. It gave a great insight into what things were like back then. The employees were all very nice. I will likely go back there next time I have to do some research for a class.
