Thank goodness for SACC

Recently, I scheduled an appointment with SACC to receive help in clarifying some of the math concepts we learned in class for the exam the very next day. It turns out that SACC does not help with homework questions that students are assigned but rather focuses on teaching you what was learned in class through a different perspective using different examples. In other words, SACC will not help you with your actual homework problems but SACC will go over concepts that will show up on assignments. Through this study session, I was able to gain a better understanding of the subject matter and will definitely schedule an appointment every week. After all, it would be better for me to gain an understanding of topics as soon as it is introduced rather than struggle later trying to teach myself something I know nothing about.

SACC conducts tutoring in groups which means that students are typically placed in a class like setting. SACC is not a private tutoring services that offers one on one help. In a way, it is beneficial to be tutored in a group setting because through participating in a group setting I felt that I was not alone in this struggle.

Equity Workshop (Career)

Today from 7:00-8:30pm I attended the Equity Workshop. The Equity Workshop consisted of representatives from five companies who came to speak about their roles and responsibilities. A typical day to day life of an Equity Analyst includes studying balance sheets, financial modeling and conducting reports. Analysts typically work in small groups consisting of one to three people. Each analyst usually focuses only on one specific sector such as energy, retail or healthcare. From this workshop, I was able to gauge where the different industries are currently heading in terms of stock valuations which I found to be very interesting. I also learned important economic information. One of the panelist mentioned the value of the dollar getting stronger and the fact that small caps tend to be more volatile (I actually have to perform more research on small caps to be able to understand what was said). In addition, I also learned that Equity Analysts have great networking opportunities. One of the panel members explained that similar to Sales and Trading, Equity Research Analysts usually meet with heads of different departments in different banks such as Chief Investment Officers and Chief Financial Officers.
Career wise, I do not think that I will pursue Equity Research but I am glad that I attended the workshop because I was able to build my financial knowledge as well as gain insider tips. I learned that it is getting to be more and more important to receive a CFA certification as well as learn new adaptable technical skills. The financial industry is always changing due to new technology so it is getting to be more important than ever to learn skills that are easily transferable in any sector in the financial sector. In sum, even though I am no longer considering Equity Research, I am now interested in pursuing Sales and Trading based on what was said during the discussions.

UCLA

During the second week of school, I attended a UCLA meeting. UCLA is a social club at school that stands for United Chinese Language Association. During the GIM event, prospective members played a game where scenarios were acted out and whoever could not continue the “scene” or ad lib it was the one who lost. I found it rather entertaining and so did my friend. Besides the game, general information about the club itself and upcoming events were also presented. So far, the event calendar includes large scale gatherings such as the Mid Autumn Festival and The Lunar Festival which will take place a few months from now. UCLA also hosts plenty of creative learning workshops such as a lantern making workshop and Mochi DIY day that will take place over the course of the semester. Moreover, it was announced that there will be a fundraiser where dumplings will be sold. This event allowed me to branch out and meet new people.
