On Thursday, Ezra, Sofa, and I attended an event hosted by Hillel. This event was the Startup Tech Fair. This was a great opportunity. There were a lot of people that attended the event. There was a large line leading out the door of Baruch to enter the room for the event. This hinted to us we were at the right place, and that the event will be helpful for us. The event provided us with information and resources we would otherwise not have. We, among other students, were able to network and meet with the founders of start-up tech companies.
This was interesting because it allowed us to see how we are able to start up our own passions. It was definitely inspiring, because it goes to show that us Baruch students are supported and given resources to succeed and pursue our passions. Of course while this event was hosted by Hillel and geared towards Jewish students, everyone was welcome and we felt that presence. This event was very interesting but not something I felt was necessarily something I would be in– just because I was intrigued by it but would rather work at a law firm or corporate office. I intend to be a corporate attorney or something amongst those lines. While my career choice would be useful for them, I’d like to be in an environment that would teach me the skills I would need. However, I am now more motivated to view different avenues for discovery. This was definitely a learning experience for me.

SACC

Academic Excellence is a key value in Baruch. Part of this means taking your success in academia into your own hands. Seeing as I was always an individual who struggled with math, I knew in order to achieve academic excellence in my pre-calculus class that I would have to work a little harder in comparison to my other classes. The workload is not that different to other classes I have scheduled. However, more time has to be allocated to receive the same results.
Knowing that a test was taking place that week, I decided to sign up for some tutoring sessions at Student Academic Consulting Center (SACC). Fortunately for me, there were weekly sessions available as well. I decided that this would force me to study and take time for the class, that I might otherwise not do so. It was also helpful, because it is more effective to study information as it comes than to try to learn it cumulatively shortly before an exam. Furthermore, there is some information you may not realize you need some clarification until you actually go over it. It helps to have someone there with you to explain it all. There is a wealth of information at the Student Academic Consulting Center. Everyone is very pleasant, from the moment you walk through the door– thought it takes some time to find this gem.
Something I have noticed is that the usage of tutoring centers in college differs from that in high school. In high school, it was rarely used, and reserved for when students absolutely needed it. However, I walked in during a dry spell of students at campus and still observed a rather full and operating center. I suppose that getting closer to our careers, and actually paying for our classes provide the incentive for students to use campus resources.
Career Fair
On Friday was a Career Fair hosted in Baruch. I was able to attend this event with Skylar and Ana. We were able to see first-hand just how Baruch prepares students for golden opportunities, and lay a platform for students to gain access to resources. There was a large line of students fully prepared in professional attire from the ground floor circling down the staircase. There was definitely a difference between the three of us and the other students attending. We quickly realized that “business casual” does not quite cut it. We took this as a learning experience to dress for the job you want. Furthermore, we saw this as an opportunity to network. Though there was an overwhelming amount of potential employers, we managed to narrow it down to the business we were interested in. I expressed an interest in Crowe Howarth and TD Bank among other corporations. It was great to see that Baruch enables and empowers students to go after the careers they desire. In the near future I hope to acquire an internship position at possibly one of the career fair businesses that were kind enough to come.
