Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC10

Dining Etiquette Workshop

For the last blog, I went to a Starr Career Development Center Workshop with two of my friends. In this dining etiquette workshop, I learned the proper table manners that need to be follow during an interview. Typically, after the first round of interview, you will be contact for a formal food interview. In this interview, your’re expected to act a certain way to make a good impression. First, we were served food. I expected a full course meal but maybe my expectation is too high. We were served a buffet style of food but they ran out of pasta before we gotten our food, that’s kinda sad. At a formal dinner, the table was set up with multiple spoons and forks. Each course have its own utensils and we started with utensils on the outside and work your way in as the meal goes on. Keep in note that water is always place on the right. After you sat down, you should place the napkin on your lap and if you want to leave to use the restroom, place the napkin on right of your plate. In such interview, she suggests not bringing a bag, if you brought on, don’t hang it on your chair but to put it behind your back. However, the way I was taught was different from what the speaker said. I was told to place your bag on the floor to your left. Perhaps there’re different ways. She also mentioned that when ordering, we shouldn’t order neither the most expensive dish nor the cheapest dish. We order something that’s medium priced. In addition, males can either keep their blazers on or off but females must keep it on. Most importantly, don’t order any alcohol even if the employer asks you to because you don’t want to get drunk make a fool out of yourself. Also, the host should always pay. Overall, this workshop was informative and helpful for me in the future if I were to go to a formal food interview. Not only so, it will also be useful if I go eat at restaurants that require formal attire.

The Museum at FIT

Today, my friends and I went to the FIT museum. To be honest, I don’t even know out of all the museums, why did we decided to go to this one. The museum, unlike our expectation, is really small. You can literally walk the entire museum in less than 5 minutes. But it wasn’t bad though, we saw a lot of interesting collections of clothes. The current exhibition at the museum is “Force of Nature.” This exhibition shows nature’s relationship to fashion and how designers were inspired by the nature. I was fascinated by the fact that designers can blend nature into a piece of clothing so perfectly. As I entered into the museum, the first piece that caught my eyes was a floral black dress. This dress was designed by Karl Lagerfeld in reference to a flower called camellia. I thought this was my favorite piece until I saw a dress that completely blow my mind. I can’t believe how this dress was right by the entrance and I missed it. Anyway, it’s called the Splash dress, designed by Iris van Herpen in 2013. Herpen used “hot air guns and metal pliers to mold sheets of acrylic.” The inspiration of this splash dress, like its name, came from water.

This is how it looks like. Can you believe this is an actual dress?!

In this visit, I learned a lot about the history of fashion and how basically everything can be related to fashion. Although this won’t really help me in the first semester at Baruch, it was fun to explore the places I’ve never been.

UCLA

I went the to first general interest meeting for the club, UCLA, which stands for United Chinese Language Association. While I was waiting for the meeting to start, I was greeted by one of the VP of the club. She was very friendly which made me feel welcomed. The moment I stepped inside the room, I was shocked by the number of people that came to the meeting. The room was packed and there weren’t enough chairs for everyone. More than half of the people have to either sit on the floor or stand. During the meeting, I got the opportunity to learn more about UCLA and the interactive games played were very interesting and fun. We played three games in total. The first game we played we can only answer a question with a question. If we make a statement then we lose.  In the second game, it’s basically draw something. We were divided into two groups, one person from each group go up to the board and draw. Whichever group guessed it first is the winner. The last game involved two players, one with headphone on with music blasting and the other player have to say the phrase on the card. The player with the headphone on have to guess what the phrase is. After the introduction and games, food were offered to us. But the line for food was so long, so I didn’t wait on line and left.

The environment is chill and friendly, therefore, I believe this will be a great opportunity for me to meet more people and make new friends. I will definitely go to the following events host by UCLA. There will be a Lantern Making Workshop on Tuesday. I really want to go and learn how to make a lantern, unfortunately, I have class so I will not be able to make it to this event.

This is the only picture that shows my face so…yeah!
