Monologue

Working out is one of the better things I did in life.

in the past, I used to be that stereotypical Asian

life was shaped by parents following the mold of others

being good at math, check. Having Tiger parents that will beat your ass, I got that. Finishing others peoples hws, light work. Attending Saturday school, unfortunately I went.

But there was more to life than that

Sports, the great outlet for fun, it kept the boredom at bay

But If I wanted to be better at the sports I played

I needed to be faster, stronger, simply better

Speed, strength, endurance, perseverance, mentality

All is needed to push one’s limit and to better themselves

And that limit is where one’s mind allows it to be

And working out was the push I need

Working out was a great filter for emotions

Whether it be sadness, happiness, angry, frustration

But I Don’t let those negative emotions put a man down

Rather in the gym it lets me be the one in control, tranquil and focused, and it is me that uses them to benefit

My body, my mind, me

The strength, the mentality will help me shape my own life instead of following the mold crafted by the life of others

Mastering the Job Interview – Basic

We were guided into our room where we signed in and took a seat. The moment Mr. Gerald Tang started his workshop, we were given a test. The test was simple, a handshake. However, it was not as easy as it seems because everybody failed. The reason was that we all remained seated when we all shaken hands with the presenter. He explained that because of this, we were naturally looked down upon by him. Ideally, we were supposed to stand, have eye contact, and perform a “proper handshake.” He states that a proper handshake first starts off flat so both parties’ thumbs can interlock. Then the grasp, its doesn’t have to be a strong grip, just with a little strength is enough. This is because the thumbs were interlocked so the handshake was nice and firm. I learned that first impression are a big important part of any interview and can happen at any time. The method for a proper handshake was new to me, I was quite surprised when he showed how a handshake was supposed to look like. and feel like. I’m looking forward to learn more from Mr. Gerald Tang on his next workshop, “Mastering the Job Interview – Expert.”

Writing Center Workshop during Anthropology

Honesty I feel asleep for the first half of the workshop, but in the end I was able to pick up some new and interesting ways to spice up my essays. Joey from the writing center gave a couple of tips and tricks in ways to smoothly navigate from the thesis statement and into the substance of the essays; as well as, the different ways to connect the topic sentences from each paragraph. Using the literature A Man’s Disgrace¸ he helped the class analyze how easily each paragraph transitioned to the next. He also stated something interesting during his lecture when it came to writing prompts, he said “don’t focus on answering the question in the writing prompts” rather find the bigger picture which will help understand the topic of the essay. This was quite helpful because I find myself to doing this on my writings. He then went on to help give an example on how to organize the structure of our anthropology midterm paper, which I will definitely steal, I mean use. The way Joey masterfully outlined the essay from just viewing the prompt, was very helpful in the sense that it can be used in any writing. I will definitely find myself going to the writing center more for the ways to improve my writing since my writing is terrible.

United Chinese Language Association Meeting

The first thing I looked for when I enter the room were acquaintances. New place, similar situation but still triggers the same nerves. Luckily, I did find what I was looking for and more. I found a couple of friends I have not seen for a couple of years. Some came just to take a picture for the Freshmen Seminar Blog, then that reminded to take one as well. It was nice to catch up with some old friends. Meeting new people is so much easier as a group of people, conversations move so much more smoothly, we learn more about each other this way. My nerves were pointless though, the upperclassmen were all great speakers and very friendly people who can simply make anyone felt welcome to the club. The executive board members introduced themselves, then broke up into networking groups. They all made their rounds, trying to recruit and obtain our interest, asking the same old questions: what years you are in, what is your major or intended major, and where you from. It was boring until I met people who were from the same high school as me, and then asked for mutual friends.  I am bad at networking but I will need it in the future. Once introductions were over, it was time for ice breaker games. We played google feud, which was fun because I found the memers in the club and I enjoyed their responses and answers. Originally, I Just wanted to come to the meeting for the food, but sometime during the introductions and games the amount of people just grew and the food line was just way too long, estimating at 80 students lining up for some chinese food, so my friend and I just went out for food. Guess I will be going to this club now to see some of my good old friends.
