Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC16

BLOG POST #3 (CAREER)

Last week I went to the career workshop called “small talk, it’s a big deal”. I went with my boys Jarrett, Sahil, Simon, and Mohtaz. It was a very humbling experience in that it really showed just how bad we are at small talking. The instructor made us role-play real life situations that we need to small talk in. We kind of cheated because we all knew each other and it would just be like any other conversation. Jarrett has trouble looking me in the eye for more than a second, which I’m not sure why but perhaps it is because I am very good looking. The instructor gave us a whole list of tips for small talking that were useful but also very obvious. Obviously I should of looked at the tips before hand because during our role play I decided to go for a compliment and told Jarrett he had a nice shirt of extravagant colors I have never seen before when he was just wearing a plain white t shirt. The instructor also mentioned how breathing helps you maintain composure and keep calm which I definitely agree with. I also liked the tip to stare in between someone’s eyebrows if direct eye contact is uncomfortable. Overall, the workshop didn’t really help because I still suck at small talking but I think it would of been better if we split up throughout the room instead of sitting next to each other.

Blog Post #2 STUDENT LIFE

Last month, I went a health event during the suicide prevention week. Mohtaz went with me and he also took this picture, so props to him for helping me out during this difficult time. Anyhow, I went to the event which was in a small room. There was a grand total of roughly 3 or 4 people so it was very exciting. The meditator explained how meditating has helped her life and we all tried it. She made us close our eyes and she kept telling us to focus on our breath. Honestly, I was pretty anxious even prior to this event and I was hoping that this would help. I repeatedly fell asleep during the session and I woke up whenever she said “focus on your breath”. When she finally told us to open our eyes, I was dazed from my semi-nap but I did feel quite relaxed. The relaxation didn’t last long after I left the room, but perhaps this is something I should try to do more often daily.

FRO Blog Post #1 (Academic)

I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art last Saturday! I went with my sister as you can see in the photo. There were countless photos to be seen but I remember the gigantic photo of George Washington crossing the Delaware. In history class last Thursday, we had just talked about this famous picture, so it was quite a coincidence that I would end up seeing the real thing 2 days later. I also saw a famous artwork named “The Death of Socrates”, which was also very relatable to my Baruch studies as I am taking philosophy, and we are currently learning about him. All the photos had captions which helped me understand the photos in context. The exhibit in the picture is the Tiffany Window, which was made in the early 1900’s. It depicts a autumn landscape and I really like its visual appeal. While attending a museum does not necessarily assist me in my first semester here at Baruch besides helping me pass Freshmen Seminar, I am now aware of the advantages I have with a CUNY ID card, such as being able to visit and explore museums for free. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is just one of the many museums I can attend for free as I saw a big list of all the museums that I can go to for free such as the Bronx Zoo and etc. I spent roughly the entire day at the museum and I am sure we still were not able to view everything. This glass artwork and other photographs that were related to my classes I am taking at Baruch were the art pieces I enjoyed the most.
