Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC16

Career Workshop

On November 9 2017, i went to the Wallstreet panel at the 7th floor of the William and Anita Newman Library. During the 2 hours long panel i learned a lot about the financial industry. This workshop brought in several alumnus finance major of Baruch College and let them talked about what it was like working in the finance world after graduation. There were many interesting stories and helpful advices being given that day. It felt almost surreal to think that in 10 to 20 years i would probably be where they are now. Maybe not the exact same career but in terms of experience. One of the speaker graduated not too long ago and he is now a graduate student. Another panel speaker said he is a part of development company based in Florida and there were many more that shared their stories with us. I definitely learned a lot from them. It was almost inspirational because most of them had graduated from Baruch College a while ago and they took many turns and risks to get to where they are today. They also shared with us what those risks were and overall i thought they were pretty inspiring and brave.

Writing Center: Academic

When I went to the writing center last Thursday I was assist with a professional writing expert with my English paper. I liked the fact that Baruch College provides its students with this type of resources. It comes especially handy to students such as myself who is not very good at writing. I talked to her there for 30 minutes. We discuss my paper and what I did that could be perfected. She was very patient and kind. She corrected my grammar mistakes and advised me in some writing techniques she likes to use while writing. It was overall a pleasant experience. The writing center is a place where students can go to be helped with their writings. It can just be a presentation, powerpoint, or even a personal writing task. I really like the fact that they do walk-ins because when i wanted to book a reservations online it was completely filled for the next 2 weeks. This just convey how much the writing center is valued by students and how important it is. I didn’t have any problem with my experience because the person who was assisting me is very attentive when i voiced my concern about my paper.

I was especially nervous for this paper because it will be my first essay in Baruch and I needed the writing center desperately. I have 2 more papers coming up and they are more challenging and more complex than my English essay. I felt a sense of relieve to know that there is a resource at Baruch College to help me in this type of situation. My global history teacher was the first to recommend the writing center to me. She said that this type of service can cause thousands of dollars while here in Baruch they give it away for free. I believe the writing center to be one of the greatest resource that Baruch College offers.

Freshman Seminar: student life Auren Kusuma

In the Finance and Economic Society general meeting we learn a lot about what the club do. FES sounded to me like another resource Baruch College have to offer to its finance major students. The president and other members of the club talked about the different type of program we can join. Each offers something unique but the overall goal is the same which is to prepare and assist its members to be ahead in both skills and connection of the finance and economic field.

There are 3 different programs being offered to everyone in the general meeting. The financial Analyst Program, the Investment Banking Program, and The Mentorship program. I was most interested in the mentorship program because of what it is about. Which basically is to help prepare its members for the industry that encompasses finance as well as economic. Finally, the general meeting also discuss the upperclassmen’s experience with these programs and all the things FES has offered them in their time at Baruch College.
