Bearcat Section – Club Fair

The Baruch Club Fair was held in the main gym during club hours on Thursday, October 3rd. The more popular clubs of the school set up booths and tables at the event, giving out flyers and introducing themselves to the new students of the school.

The gymnasium was packed with new and old students alike looking to find a group with interests similar to their own. Music was playing, students were dancing and singing. Some clubs offered snacks and refreshments to the crowd, while others held contests and raffles. One club produced a giant cardboard cutout of a Pikachu for students to get a picture with.

A club fair was the perfect event to showcase some of Baruch’s multitude of clubs. Instead of having to read through dozens of club names on the Baruch website, students were able to meet and interact with key club members. It was a jolly event that brought the students of Baruch together for a good time.

New Subway Design for NYC?

The MTA is urging city officials to adopt articulated trains – similar to accordion-style buses – to the NYC transit lines. These new trains would have no doors between cars, allowing people to move freely through the subway.

While this model definitely has its benefits, the application of it to the city may have its downfalls. As a commuting college student, this reader shudders at the idea of having to go through an unnecessary change. Introducing a newly designed subway to our city’s extensive map of railroads will take time and probably temporary reroutes and delays for weeks, maybe months. The benefits would not be worth it.

High Death Toll in Syria, No Proof of Chemical Attack

Wednesday, August 21st: Hundreds of people were killed by what appeared to be a chemical weapon outside Demascus, but no exact cause of death could be established. The signs of a chemical attack were all there: rows of corpses with no visible injuries, hospitals flooded with patients all showing symptoms of exposure to some sort of chemical, recorded images of a gray cloud exploding over a neighborhood. Yet it is impossible to be sure of what happened.

Not even photographic or video evidence could clearly explain the sequence of events, so the United Nations sent a team over to Syria to investigate the many who perished. It is important for the UN to understand what happened, as a chemical attack would mean a change in the level of the west’s involvement in the conflict.

Suicide Bombing in Central Syria Linked to Al Qaeda

Reports of a suicide bombing in central Syria that killed more than 30 people (most of them civilians) flooded the news this Sunday, becoming the second such attack by a bomber linked to Al Qaeda in two days.

The rebellion in Syria has caused the country to become a hotbed for terrorist activity, which is one of the main causes of the lack of peace in the region. For months now the United States has been pushing for peace talks to be held between the government and opposing forces, but those talks have been continuously delayed.

Unfortunately after two years of chaos, the crisis in Syria has shown no signs of slowing down.

Janet L. Yellen – First Woman to Lead Federal Reserve?

Ms. Yellen, 67, was nominated by President Obama who claims that she is one of the best economists of the country, to lead the Federal Reserve. The vice-chairwoman would be replacing Mr. Bernanke, whose terms ends on January 31st.

The Federal Reserve is the biggest bank in the United States; it is in charge of printing currency, lowering or raising interest rates, and generally keeping the economy afloat. This makes the nomination a big step in the woman’s rights movement, as Yellen would be in charge of the U.S. economy. In a male-dominated government, appointing a female to head the Federal Reserve will show the progress the country is making towards giving equal rights to everyone. So far only a few people have spoken out against Yellen, but do so because of her policies, not her gender.
