Who I think I am (Anita)

Hi, everyone, I am Anita. I was born in and grew up in China. I came to New York City in May 2012. New York City is a really amazing place. “There is always something happening here. If you get bored, it is really your own fault.” And it is true. I am deeply affected by NYC’s diverse cultures. I like going to various museums here.  I went to the Metropolitan Museum last year. And I really desire to visit the Museum of Modern Art because I know there is the painting The Scream by  Edvard Munch being exhibited until April. I hope I have the chance to see it. Before I get to New York, I was living in a small town in China. I had a plenty friends whom were as silly as I was. They were cute and sweet. Later, many of us went to colleges in different cities and went abroad. We separate from other now but I believe one day we will reunite. OK, here comes my hobbies.  I like slow running. I used to run 4 miles every Saturday in China. Because I find it very helpful to relax myself from pressures. When I am running, I don’t have to care about how the world is going, if I have finished my homework or how I did in the last exam. I only focus on the path I am running on. I only need to get my shirt wet and insist to the finish line. There might not be fans waiting for me on the finishing line and there might not be flowers and medals for me if I finish it. But it is that kind of self-satisfaction brings me to the pure world where I can live without upset and worry. Besides, sometimes after I get really tired from the running, I can have a nice sleep that night. I feel replenished and reborn the next morning. However, after I came to New York City, I barely run. It is so hard to find a place to run in this busy city. Everyone is so busy everyday that it’s like New Yorkers are already running every day. You can see people running everywhere actually, running for a 6 train to work, running for a 9:30 am class, running across the road…… On the other hand, I really don’t have time to run now. Taking five classes, tons of homework assignments are waiting for me. Anyway, I am still enjoying my new life here, as a college student in Baruch, ( despite the limit of uploading a picture to this blog is too small which drives me crazy.)

Who I think I am ( Szepei Cheung)

I-LOVE-NY

I am always who I am and I never try to be anybody else. So let me introduce myself here to you . Me name is szepei cheung and is pronounced “c-pei”. I am from china and I came to America when I was 11, first I landed at Atlanta, Georgia then I decided to move to New York half a year ago. I go to baruch college in manhattan planning to major in finance.  New York  was definitely a different experience for me. New York is not a just a state to me, it is a new world to me compared to Georgia. The crowd-ness , the diversity, and uniqueness among every New Yorker excites me. There are definitely a lot to learn in the big new world. Despite the new excitement in the big city, I really missed my mom and her cookings. It is very comforting to have someone to prepare your foods everytime. And I am very thankful for that. I clearly remenber her giving me little lessons before I came to New york. She specifically told me to think through and make the right decision because now I am alone in NY and no one will be there to look after me. Coming to New York was not an easy thing. I have to work to support my own life because I want my mom to believe that I can be indepedent without her. To be honest, I was very scared at first.  I was scared that I will take the subway and eventually ended up at an unknown location. I was so afraid to bump into strangers in sidewalk and they will get mad and beat me up. I was scared to not have any friends. But now , I am not scared anymore, I know exactly how the subway system works, I have friends that will be there for me whenever I need them and I will do the same thing to them too. Coming to New York definistly shaped who I truly am because I make my own decisions. In Georgia I was just a baby that listen to whatever my mom tells me to do .

1. To China With Love

This is a song from an alternative rock band from Borlänge, Sweden. They recent albums have experimentally blend in Chinese element into their music, this song I posted is the most representative one of their newest music style.

2.Know Who You Are at Every Age

Cocteau Twins were a Scottish alternative rock band active from 1979 to 1997, known for innovative instrumentation and atmospheric, non-lyrical vocals. From the way I think of them, I‘m not just attracted to the magnificent voice of the vocal, also the deep thoughtful meanings and the interesting ideas, they brought it to the melody are also fascinated me.

3.You Know I’m No Good

The most talented soul singer died of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011,I was kind of shocked when I first heard it. Recommending her most popular and representative song to memorize her.

4.What Katie Did

The song was written when the lead vocal of “The Libertines”, Peter Doherty was in a relationship with world-known super model Kate Moss. It’s a breezy sonorous song, and easy to sing along with. There’s also video clip of Peter and Kate singing this song together at some music festivals on Youtube.

5.Long Time

From a funk band called “Cake”, Cake epitomized the postmodern, irony-drenched aesthetic of ‘90s geek rock. I heard this song in a episode of “Shameless”. Great TV show, great song.

6.Love will tear us apart

My favorite song.

7.A Perfect Indian

The first time I heard it was another singer’s cover version, and I went to google this singer right away. The individuality of her is that she is bareheaded.(yet still beautiful)

8.Friday I’m in Love

Who doesn’t like Friday.

9. Temptation

This song is Moby’s cover version. It was originally from famous punk band “New Order”. Don’t judge me, but I think I like this version better.

10.Distraction

From “Zero 7″. The vocal of this band, Sia Furler recently became more and more popular, due to she was in “The voice” as Christina Aguilera’s  co-coach. Great  singer.

I’m having the hardest time to choose 10 out of over 2000 songs in my Ipod. I wanted to choose one song out of each singer that I like, but it was still a lot, so I only wrote the description about the first 10…

Peace

I love music and I like to dance so I couldn’t pick just 10, more and more songs kept popping into my head. It goes to say that isn’t unusual to see me singing and dancing to myself, I can’t help it sometimes. Sometimes I wonder what life would be like without music and inwardly I cringe because maybe I’m exaggerating or being over-dramatic, but I can’t even imagine a world without music and just thinking about a place without any at all seems horribly boring and barren.

Who I think I am (Qingyuan Shi)

Hi, everyone! My name is Qingyuan Shi. My English name is Dale. I was born on June, 1992 in China. I graduated from my high school in 2010. People usually think that studying math is very hard and boring, however during the period of my high school, my favorite subject was math, and I liked it because I met a very nice math teacher. He is a humor man, he used to say something very funny during the class, and he used his way making math easy to understand. Before I came to United State, he encouraged me to learn English hard and show him an American girlfriend after four years.

I have a big family, and I can not remember how many people in my family. I have two elder sisters; lots of cousins; nephews; uncles and ants… actually, I have no idea either why people have so many family members in China. Both of my parents are businessmen and they work together which is resource producing company. I am the youngest one from my parents.

In my spare time, I like to read novels. I think reading could enlarge my knowledge. As for novels, I could imagine whatever I like such as a well-known scientist or a kung-fu master. In addition to reading, I also like to play PC games. There are a lot of grownups think that playing PC games hinders students from learning. But I think PC games could motivate me to learn something such as English or Japanese. My favorite course is English because I think it is interesting to say one thing via different sounds. I wish my English could be improved in the next four years and I could be able to speak fluent English in the future.

I have prepared a list of songs that  i think inspirational for me.i listen to them most of the time when i’m low. These songs do not necessarily define who i’m but they are the good pick up when i’m feeling sad. i know its boring to listen to such songs but we all need motivation at sometimes.I do not exactly listen to these songs all the time but only when i think about things in my past and the mistakes i have made. i hope you guys do not judge me as a ‘Loner’ but as a guy who occasionally needs inspiration and motivation to move on in life.

Hello..my name is Shaila Ansari. I am from Rajasthan, the largest state in India, which is known for its history and kings. There is amazing culture diversity throughout the country. As a result, we have many festivals and many holidays!! :D I like all the festivals but my favorite is the festival of colors.

The most amazing moments of my life are of my boarding school. I learned a lot of different things in school like horse-riding, craft, squash, soccer, etc. I am an Indian folk dancer and I know mostly all states dances. I am also good at academics especially math. Boarding school taught me how to be independent, how to survive without your family and how to find happiness in small things. But i hated getting up in the morning for cro
ss country practice and the restriction on mobile phones and laptops. We used to get 7 minutes every week to speak to our parents. My school is considered the best boarding school in India and the students are from different states which gave me a chance to meet people from different background.                                         426956_10152414528855553_428249918_nhome_img1
I dropped a semester because I went to India to attend my brother’s wedding. Weddings in India consist of many different events and we wear bright colors on the functions. We have a separate event for dance and music. Sometimes, I miss my country and my parents so much that I feel like leaving everything but I am so glad that I got through Baruch. I have to do a lot for my parents and to achieve my goal, I have to work hard.

I like Baruch because I get to meet people from different walks of life and I love making new friends. Baruch is totally different from colleges in my country as its not compulsory to attend classes. ;) I am looking forward to many new experiences and challenges.

Blog Post #1: Sebastiaan’s playlist

I have made a pretty varied playlist: from one of the most sexiest dance tunes of this time (please, do watch the clip if you haven’t seen it yet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93ASUImTedo); to Joe Pass’ classic Autumn Leaves; to some singer-songwriters from the 90′s; to modern electronic-indie. It was pretty difficult to select just ten songs, so, yes, it did become a bit longer. (I do apologize if it’s too long.)

Most of my time in high-school I spend playing/performing in bands – many hours on learning lyrics, chords(progressions), writting new stuff etc. The songs on the list, amongst others, have shaped me as an artist. I’ve been lucky to have seen all of them (except from Pass) life at big festivals or cozy small theaters and I wish to continue to enjoy music as much as possible.

Who I Think I Am (Vivian Hung)

Who I Think I am

Hi everyone!

I’m Vivian Hung. I’m from a South America country called Venezuela. And I’m a descendant of Chinese people. As you can guess, I can speak both Spanish and Chinese.

imageschina

First of all, regarding to the topic “Who I think I am”, in a simple way I will say I’m ME. I think we are all unique and special. But I will tell you more about who I think I am.

I think I’m a outgoing person. I have a multicultural background. I grow up in Venezuela and I have been to China to study the Chinese language. (I couldn’t speak Chinese before.) I have meet people from different parts of the world and have experienced two different cultures. I’m someone who likes to meet new people, make friends and try and get to know new things. I’m curious about things I don’t know; I like learning. I’m active and always open to new experiences.

I also think I’m caring. I care a lot about people I love, such as my family and friends. I think they are really everything to me because it doesn’t matter what I had gone trough, I am going trough or I will go through, they are the ones who are really always there for me, no matter what. Parents, as we know they will do their best for us. And friends let me give you an example of mine. When I was in China and my parents needed to go back to Venezuela. It was really difficult for me to adapt and being far from my family, but then I realized that my friends have became almost like my family in that long period of time. They shared with me and cared about me. It was so warm and happy to have them. So I really treasure everything relating to my family and friends, such as the relationship, the time I have to share with them, their feelings and so on. There is a quote that I really like from the movie “The Last Song” written by Nicholas Sparks which is “ Sometimes you have to be apart from people you love, but that doesn’t mean you love them any less. Sometimes, it even makes you love them more.” I have experienced that feeling so I treasure a lot people I love.

I’m someone who have learned to be resilient. Life is not that difficult but also not that easy. We face obstacles and we sometimes feel helpless and hopeless. But I really found out that we need to take a good attitude, be optimist and keep going whenever we feel in that way. Do our best. We tend to see the obstacle which is in front of us much bigger than it is. But after we defeated it, we realized it wasn’t as terrifying as we used to think of or see it.

And for the last, I will tell you things that I like and like doing. I love outside activities. I like playing badminton, volleyball and basketball. I love the beach, it is the place that I love the most going to. In fact, I go with my friends to the beach every time we can.

I’m happy to be in Baruch, this will be another new experience for me. I think I’m someone who enjoys her life with what it brings.
