Baruch thus far has been a great learning environment and one of my more difficult challenges. I constantly feel overwhelmed with work and subjected to stress. However, my drive to succeed outweighs my feelings of overwhelm and my fear of failure. Work piles up, assignments that seem far away approach quickly, and deadlines must be met. I have learned this all in a short amount of time and I will use this to guide me through my next seven semesters at Baruch. I like the resources Baruch makes available for me though. There is SACC for tutoring, professors have office hours and genuinely care about you passing the course, and freshman orientation has been helpful too. Being in a block made the transition from high school to college much easier. Freshman orientation offered helpful tools and access to resources that we would have never known was available without the advisers letting us know. Though we are in blocks, Baruch has proven itself to be very independent. You can not rely on anybody in college. It is up to you to do your work, get your assignments in on time, find out what the assignments were, etc. Even in blocks it is evident that some people are not reliable. The independence is what partakes in me feeling so overwhelmed. In high school other people could be used as a crutch. In college, there are no crutches… Nobody to blame for not doing your work, or knowing the assignment, or failing your test. You are responsible for your own actions at all times. Overall, I think the rest of my three and a half years at Baruch will be quite successful. My first semester has set the standard for the rest of my semesters and freshman orientation has offered me helpful tools and resources to exercise for my benefit. Any time I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed I will remind myself that someone in the admissions office felt that I was worthy of attending and I have what it takes to prove them right! Thank you to Jori and Summer for being great advisers and helping us understand the fundamentals of college!
