Sidney Mishkin Gallery
Among the several workshops I have attended, I like the Sidney Mishkin Gallery the most. I like visiting galleries and museums. I like appreciating art. When I am looking at the paintings, I feel quiet and calm. I feel connection to the artist. I will try to understand what the artist’s message by appreciating his/her work. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what really the artist’s view, but my own perspective matters. I can relate myself, my own experience to the work because art is always abstract. It’s a trip of self-exploration and a chance to clam myself down, throwing away pressure.

my parttime job as a Chinese tutor
Hi, everyone. I am Anita. Today I am going to talk about my part time job. I work as a Chinese tutor during weekend. My student is four year old Indian girl. I am surprised at first why an Indian kid wanted to learn Chinese. I mean, she can’t even speak English well. She can only count to 37 in English. So it really surprises that she wants to learn Chinese. Besides, I know many people find Chinese difficult to learn. Then I find out that she really likes a Chinese cartoon called “Kailan.” So in some way she becomes interested in Chinese. In fact, she is also learning Hindi (from her mother) and Spanish (from the day care school) at the same time. So, I am thinking if she feels confused sometime. We communicate with each other in English. She’s a really cute girl, but she’s too little to take it seriously. Every time I go, she wants to play with me rather than literally learn. And I understand, so most of the time we are playing. We do the role playing together. It is really funny when she asks me to play the daughter and she plays the mother. She will act as a mother and use the kind of motherlike tone to ask me what breakfast I would like to have and she will “cook” for me. Sometimes I feel so guilty because I don’t teach her Chinese but play around. And her parents are very nice people. They treat me very well. So I don’t want to disappoint them. Gradually, I learn to teach her some simple Chinese words when we are playing, for example, I would ask what’s her favorite animal, color, food and then I will tell her the Chinese words. In fact, I really like this job because sometimes it gives me a chance to go back to childhood. When I am staying with her, I feel like I am a kid too. I can throw away my upset and pressure for a while. Because of the midterm, I haven’t been there for two weeks… So after this week, I am really looking forward to see the girl again.

Who I think I am (Anita)
Hi, everyone, I am Anita. I was born in and grew up in China. I came to New York City in May 2012. New York City is a really amazing place. “There is always something happening here. If you get bored, it is really your own fault.” And it is true. I am deeply affected by NYC’s diverse cultures. I like going to various museums here. I went to the Metropolitan Museum last year. And I really desire to visit the Museum of Modern Art because I know there is the painting The Scream by Edvard Munch being exhibited until April. I hope I have the chance to see it. Before I get to New York, I was living in a small town in China. I had a plenty friends whom were as silly as I was. They were cute and sweet. Later, many of us went to colleges in different cities and went abroad. We separate from other now but I believe one day we will reunite. OK, here comes my hobbies. I like slow running. I used to run 4 miles every Saturday in China. Because I find it very helpful to relax myself from pressures. When I am running, I don’t have to care about how the world is going, if I have finished my homework or how I did in the last exam. I only focus on the path I am running on. I only need to get my shirt wet and insist to the finish line. There might not be fans waiting for me on the finishing line and there might not be flowers and medals for me if I finish it. But it is that kind of self-satisfaction brings me to the pure world where I can live without upset and worry. Besides, sometimes after I get really tired from the running, I can have a nice sleep that night. I feel replenished and reborn the next morning. However, after I came to New York City, I barely run. It is so hard to find a place to run in this busy city. Everyone is so busy everyday that it’s like New Yorkers are already running every day. You can see people running everywhere actually, running for a 6 train to work, running for a 9:30 am class, running across the road…… On the other hand, I really don’t have time to run now. Taking five classes, tons of homework assignments are waiting for me. Anyway, I am still enjoying my new life here, as a college student in Baruch, ( despite the limit of uploading a picture to this blog is too small which drives me crazy.)
