Ryo Toyonaga Gallery- Kierra’s Experience

The gallery bestowed the paintings of artist Ryo Toyonaga’s most recent work, Mindscapes. Toyonaga is a post modernist painter that is influenced by his dreams and sub-conscious. Throughout the gallery, I noticed that most of his work reflected creatures living in a different world. He captures this sort of imaginary by using vivid usage of bright colors and shadings to get his point across. It is said that “Toyonaga “sees” the images fixed in his mind before he captures the images on his paint brush. These images slowly evolve as he works.” The painting at the exhibit that stood out to me the most was Untitled C-14 (2012). The second I laid eyes on this painting I automatically thought about a bowl of spaghetti. I don’t really know why this thought crossed my mind. I guess I was a little bit hungry while I was viewing this particular painting. Outside of the painting resembling a bowl of spaghetti, I also like the detail Toyonaga adds to this image. Although, it seemed as simple as a bowl of spaghetti to me, a deeper meaning, one that I’m not very sure of, possibly can be drawn from the painting. I had a great time studying Ryo Toyonaga’s perspective on a different world and how he captures this world through his paintings.

Kierra’s Final Blog Post

My first semester at Baruch has been a great learning experience. I was given the opportunity of taking accountability of my own success. Baruch has showed me that independence is the key to a bright future and in reality you only have yourself to depend on. I’ve learned to use my time more effectively as I embark on my next semesters at Baruch. I’ve grown to realize that doing an English paper the night before it is due and receiving a B+ is not expectable anymore. A B+ is good, but an A or A- sounds a lot better. Planning ahead and defeating procrastination are key aspects that will guide me to accomplish greater things in life. I’m slowly facing the reality of being a young adult. It’s time to make smarter decisions, decisions that are going to be beneficial to my future. With this said, freshman seminar has helped bridge the gap between the transition of being a high school graduate into becoming a freshman in college. Fro provided great resources that I will eventually use to help my time at Baruch go a lot smoother and more productive. Overall, this is only the beginning to great levels of success I’m soon to experience later on in life. Special thanks to everyone I’ve meet so far for making my experience at Baruch positive, productive, and adventurous.

1. Through my self assessments I’ve learned that I am cooperative, friendly, and understanding. I generally enjoy caring for others,  meeting new people, and working in groups.  However, in knowing this, I’m still undecided about my choice of major and career goals.

2. The results from my self assessments didn’t really reflect a change in what I planned for myself  because I didn’t establish a career plan yet.

3. Participating in Focus 2 didn’t help clarify a future direction for myself because at this point in my life I’m still undecided about what I want to pursue in life.

Blog #2

After reading everyone’s blog, I must say this assignment allowed us to open up with each other more and helped us realize basically we all are the same. It’s the idea that at times, some may feel as though they’re the only one going through a specific situation. With this assignment it helped us realize we all go through the same things, experience some of the same situations, and most of all, through these experiences, we are not alone. I guess you can say this assignment was one of my most favorite assignments I’ve done so far since I’ve been in school. It was useful in allowing my classmates and I get the opportunity to know more about each other. This task was greatly accomplished. I also would like to add that I enjoyed everyone’s blog and how each blog helped me learn new aspects about my classmates that go beyond physically characteristics we see on a day to day basis. I liked learning how Shaloma stated she has a close knit family, and how Leann wish she could say the same about her family and being family oriented. I also liked the different genres of music in each one of the music play lists I tuned into. I was able to experience one-on-one time with the artist listed in each play list. This is essential in the sense that it’s always good to try to see someone else’s point of view on how they’re feeling during particular times in their lives. Overall, it was a great experience to learn new facts about my classmates and how in reality, we all can relate to each other in some shape, form, or fashion.

Kierra’s Playlist

http://grooveshark.com/playlist/Kierra+s+Playlist/83234334

This play list says a lot about the type of person I am.  On a day today basis, I go through different events of mood changes.  I guess you can say everyone goes through this, but my mood changes are reflected in the type of music I listen to.  For example, today I would say I would’ve listened to R&B instead of Rap.  This type of genre of music puts me in a more relaxing type of mood, which allows me to wash away my problems and enjoy the words the artist are speaking in my ear.  Music in a way helps me get through anything.  It gives me strength to get through a hard day at work or even a bad morning before I go to school.

At first I wasn’t really the kind of person that lived my life through music.  I believed that whatever you feed your spirit is what your mind embodies.  For example, if you listen to Hardcore Rap everyday of your life, this type of music affects you in various ways.  Your vocabulary is altered, the usage of certain words becomes a habit, and after a while these negative aspects becomes hard to get rid of out of your life.  However, as I got older, I realized listening to music isn’t so bad after all.  It allows you to listen in on how the artist feels about certain situations and sometimes certain people.  You basically get the chance to have a one-on-one experience with your favorite artists.  These types of experiences can occur at any given time, moment, or place.

All in all, I guess you can say I enjoy the essence behind a well- written song, whether it’s Hip-Hop & R&B, Pop, Rap, or even Country music.  Music moves my soul and I appreciate great music when I hear it.  Sometimes it can be used in a positive way to help one become motivated to write a song of their own , or just as a way to get away from everyday life struggles we face on a day to day basis.  This play list that I’ve created opened the doors into my life.  Each song represents some sort of aspect that helps determine the type of person that I am.
