I love music and I like to dance so I couldn’t pick just 10, more and more songs kept popping into my head. It goes to say that isn’t unusual to see me singing and dancing to myself, I can’t help it sometimes. Sometimes I wonder what life would be like without music and inwardly I cringe because maybe I’m exaggerating or being over-dramatic, but I can’t even imagine a world without music and just thinking about a place without any at all seems horribly boring and barren.

I have made a pretty varied playlist: from one of the most sexiest dance tunes of this time (please, do watch the clip if you haven’t seen it yet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93ASUImTedo); to Joe Pass’ classic Autumn Leaves; to some singer-songwriters from the 90’s; to modern electronic-indie. It was pretty difficult to select just ten songs, so, yes, it did become a bit longer. (I do apologize if it’s too long.)

Most of my time in high-school I spend playing/performing in bands – many hours on learning lyrics, chords(progressions), writting new stuff etc. The songs on the list, amongst others, have shaped me as an artist. I’ve been lucky to have seen all of them (except from Pass) life at big festivals or cozy small theaters and I wish to continue to enjoy music as much as possible.

Each of these songs has its own appeal to me in the matter of college. My moods change immensely depending if I have control of my life in that moment of time. College is still a new concept for me, so my mind is still adjusting to the pressures of the work load. Most songs on the playlist are not happy, motivating pop songs. It was not my choice to go to college, but my mother’s. Unfortunately this is still an open wound, a raw argument that she and I have from time to time, especially that she lives three thousand miles away. For is particular matter, I put “Numb” and “A Place for my Head” by Linkin Park on my playlist. Actually, most of the songs sort of relate to this specific one I’ve pointed out, like “Inside the Fire” by Disturbed, and “Creep” by Radiohead. Creativity and schoolwork never came easy to me growing up, and still does not. I have worked twice as hard as my peers to get where I am now and I still don’t think it is good enough. I feel like I always have my family and professors watching me to see if I break from the pressures of school, which is why I put “Somebody’s Watching Me,” by Rockwell, in the playlist. Because of my past struggles in school, sometimes I feel completely lost in my classes, which is where “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin comes into the picture. There would be times where I tried to solve a problem from all angles I can possibly find, only to draw a blank on the subject.

Not all experiences I had so far in college are negative. I am determined to turn things around. I forgot most of the opportunities that this fine institution provides. I do not like getting help unless I really need it, but at this point in the semester, I give in. I made tutoring appointments and study more. I started to understand some things said in classes and I would leave my classes happy and accomplished, with just a little headache from the lectures. When these times occur, I smile like a doofus and I feel energetic, I have loud dance music in my mind. Just keep in mind, I love Korean pop music, which is why two songs on my playlist are “Fantastic Baby,” by Big Bang and “I am the Best” by 2NE1. It makes me feel almighty and powerful when I have control.

One thing I absolutely love about college is that I have no Friday classes. When I finish my class at 12:25 on Thursday, I mentally scream “Thursday” by The Weeknd all the way home and straight to my bed and sleep. My boyfriend is really supportive of me and is a big factor of keeping me strong during hard times. If I’m struggling on an assignment over the weekend, he’s there with me helping. My song for him is “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol.

Picking my 10 favorite songs was pretty difficult. Although my music taste is pretty varied, Hip-Hop has always been the genre of choice!

It’s 4:03 Am and I need to finish this assignment so I can fool myself into thinking I’m going to get any sleep. As for how does this playlist give anyone a glimpse into the inner depths of my psyche? I’m not certain. I do know that I rarely listen to it anymore and it may speak to a different time and place…. I suppose that was a conscious effort on my part to maybe draw a line between who I was coming into Baruch and who I am now. Which is pretty damn tired with half a book to read, an exam, and a quiz due tomorrow. This is after putting in about sixty some odd hours in my day job this week. But what I like about this school is that that describes a lot of people here. A lot of students here have that same stoic tired face that I have in the morning… wondering where the coffee is. To tie it together somewhat so I actually get credit for doing this assignment… a lot of this music describes all the hard work and distractions that I had in getting here. And now that I’m here I’m pretty psyched… mostly tired actually… but psyched nonetheless…. content.  Also I couldn’t find “Reckoner” so “There there” was what I had to work with.

“Last Nite” and “Can’t Stand Me Now” are rock. It says I like something with a good beat and a rocking rhythm guitar.

“Nightcall” and “Midnight City” are electro. Once again, it says I like things with a good beat and a good melody.

“Parity Jam” and “Upular” are not games. You think this is a game? It’s not.

“Stickerbrush Symphony” is from a game. You can think it’s a game. Also, if you can’t chill out to this, then I’m sorry.

“Pathétique” for piano that doesn’t have to sound so classical.

“The Crisis” for piano that sounds classical but in an entirely different way.

“Campanella” for sleep well, sleep tight, good nights.

“The Badness” – J. Cole

“I seen a baby cry and seconds later she laughed;the beauty of life, the pain never lasts.” This is one of my favorite quotes because it is self explanatory and says so much about life. Whenever I’m in a situation where I feel helpless or just don’t know where to turn I remember that those feelings are temporary because after every dark night comes a bright morning. No matter how bad life can get, the pain will never last.

“World Keep Spinnin'” – Joe Budden

“Ima call you a coward if you alive and suicidal, either be grateful for everything God said you were supposed to get or pull the trigger and get over it.” A lot of times when things aren’t right we get so wrapped up in our own issues that we forget about the world around us. I tend to be rather harsh on myself because even though times can be rough someone else out there has it worse and I should rather be grateful for what I do have and the good times I’ve spent instead of dwelling on the negative.

“Send Him Our Love” – Joe Budden

“Love something too much guarantee it’ll kill ya.” As a Taurus I tend to love hard which can be one of my biggest flaws. I always want to give people the benefit of the doubt even when they deserve it the least. Sometimes we can love something/someone so much we are blinded to the fact that it is actually hurting us.

Appreciate them to the fullest extent and then beyond, because you never really know what you got til it’s gone.” Simple. Self-explanatory. Know what you have while it’s there. Appreciate it while it’s there. There’s no time to love it when it’s gone.

Holding me down that’s what she there for.” I have very intense friendships and I cherish each and every one. My friends are like family, they hold it down for me and I do the same for them.

“Anybody out there relate to my pain turn the music up and let me know that I’m sane.” Music is what helps me get through my days. It’s something I can relate to no matter what mood I’m in. I have a very diverse playlist, coinciding with every emotion. Music speaks a language that understands me. “Depression tells me I suck. So I reply I ain’t here cus I fell down, I’m here cus I got up.”

“Losing My Balance” – J. Cole

“Hoping this will reach you and you understand that your value ain’t determined by another man.” You make who you are, you determine your value. People only see what you allow the to see, only hear what you allow them to hear. “I know the hood raised you but there’s bigger better things.” Step outside your comfort zone, there is an entire world waiting to be discovered outside of it.

I have been here for almost 4 years. Meanwhile, I became a Baruch’s student for exactly one month which means I have reached my college dream, because I had no chance to attend a college in China. However, college courses are very challenging and different as my high school. As shown in the photos, the professor usually keeps talking and talking, there is a series of note we need to write down and organize by ourselves. In addition, there are bunch of readings and writing assignments that we need to finish in each week. The most anguished thing, I had experienced in, is waiting for a train. There is always a problem causes the train to delay and we need to wait for a train about half hour sometimes. In those photos, you can see many people are waiting for the train. On other hand, the lucky thing is that I have a lovely baby although he took over the most time of me. As a result, I have an extremely busy month as shown in my calendar. In the meantime, I really appreciated about my mother’s sacrifice which helps me to look after my baby when I was going to school.  By the way, 10 February is Chinese New Year. I celebrated with my family, and we had a wonderful dinner together. For the New Year, I hope everyone to be healthy and happy.
