Soo’s Monologue

Hello. I am Soo. I have lived in Korea for 19 years. 3 months ago, I came to the U.S. I am not used to living and studying in the U.S. yet. However, I like to live here. I want to live in NY continuously even after I graduate from college. So, I really hope my English enhances soon. When I was about to write my monologue, I thought about why I came to the U.S. and how I could come to US. Before writing about the reasons, I will write about my life in Korea. When I was young, around 14, I saw a lot of American dramas and movies which dealt with school life. The girls and boys in the movies looked so free and excited and since that time, I wanted to go America unconsciously. I think I had some American dream. I thought that if I go to America, I could become free and I could do everything that I want to do. It doesn’t mean that my life in Korea was not good, but I had some illusions about the life in U.S. I was not be allowed to go to the US when I was 14. However, after 3 years, I asked again to go to the US. When I was 17. It is the hardest time for Korean students. That is because going to a good college is very important for Koreans. So, I went to school at 8 a.m. and came back home at 10 p.m. We took 8 classes a day and we studied on our own until 10. Sometimes, we even go to school on weekends. In some ways, it was a good experience to learn many things and make exciting memories with friends because we stayed together most of our time, on the other hand I felt too big of a burden at that time. Then, I felt I wanted to go to America once again but, I failed to go to the US again. Then, I took the Korean SAT and I gave up on going to college in Korea and I came here. I appreciate my parents everyday because they trust me enough to send me to here. I will do my best because I really wanted to come since I was young. The reason that I want to come here is the American dream. Even though the life in America is just my illusion, I will try hard to achieve good results and fulfill my dreams.

  1. Hi Soo,
I can relate with what you wrote here because I am an international student too, and I also watched American Teenage Movies and somehow I thought the same things as you did. I like very much how you described your life in Korea and I also have to say that the” American Dream” is not just a dream, you can make it happen !
Ps: your photo is really cute ^_^
    Regards,
