Gregor Samsa is a traveling salesman, wakes up in his bed to find himself transformed into a large insect. He works hard every day in order to support his family. He is the financial backbone of the family after his father lost all his money in a business. H works extremely hard to get the family out of the debt and to feed his family. This all quality reflects he was a very loveable, responsible son and brother he was.After turning into an insect, he was locked in his room all day and his sister use to bring food for him. He was bored of staying inside the room all the time so he used to climb the celling of and try to occupy himself. He was thrown by apples by his father in disgust sometimes.
“Dead?” said Mrs. Samsa and looked questioningly at the cleaning woman, although she could have checked everything on her own and it was clear even without a check. “I should say so,” said the cleaning woman and, by way of proof, poked Gregor’s body with the broom a considerable distance more to the side. Mrs. Samsa made a movement, as if she wished to restrain the broom, but did not do it. “Well,” said Mr. Samsa, “now we can give thanks to God.” He crossed himself, and the three women followed his example. Grete, who did not take her eyes off the corpse, said, “Just look how thin he was. He has eaten nothing for such a long time. The meals which came in here came out again exactly the same.”(Metamorphosis,57)
The one thing that amazes me the most is that after having such huge shift of being a human to a living creature “insect” Gregor he still did not lose his mind and was still calm and patience towards his existence.
Despite of receiving hatred and ignorance from his family he did not lose calm. He was a bread winner of the family until he suddenly turned in an insect but now since he has become a useless creature he had actually become a burden for his family and all they wanted was to get rid of him. And one day they find him dead lying in the room, all his family seemed happy as they had finally got what they wanted.
