Enrichment workshops #2

Hello guys! I have amazing news in how I could be able to enroll myself into a club where everyone was treated as a part of the family. Perhaps in my high school was sort of more strict and more not into the club’s inspiration so that made the club really boring in terms of activities and presence. The first day when I had the meeting in the VSA community club was fun because they talked about the major events where everyone can participate that includes games, fashion shows and etc. The e board members were talking about how they manage their time to always come to the club or sometimes hang out in the office as part of their home or an environment for them to relax. So I thought that we will get the freedom of to be able to attend the club and hangout as much as we can. Last week the club assigned us to do a family event, in which each member was assigned with name tags and numbers from 1-6 and made us into groups. The numbers symbolized the mock family that we are going to be involved with. But of course the e board members were the mock family leaders. We played a total of 3 games, one the family chant, two, the post is whoever who can stick the most on the family member and three, the telephone charades. The fun part is that I could be able to interact with everyone else that is not from my class or outside friends. Everyone is so nice on the club they don’t exclude you, they always ask you questions and they are extremely caring. I really love the experience that I participated in and I think I would keep going to the club for the next couple of semesters.

Weekly Reflection

My past two weeks have been very calm due to all the days off. I’m starting to get into the habit of doing major assignments ahead of time during any gaps I have doing nothing at home so that I am not stressed last minute. I also took some of my first college exams so I am taking all the good and bad that came with in and I am working to keep good grades. I am currently working on my essay due Sunday. I  need to catch up on some math homework soon because the due dates are coming up. I think doing work like this is in my best interest from now on.

Weekly Reflection 9/24

My week has been really great. My sister is 6 months pregnant and I have been helping her with different tasks that she needs, like cleaning the cat box and other things. I am really excited to be an aunt, especially because this is going to be the first baby of the family. I got the gifts for the baby. I got a bath robe, a maternity bag for my sister, and a snowsuit for the baby. It was all kind of expensive but I don’t really mind because I know that it’s all worth it. My sister’s husband has a lot of sister’s and he’s the only boy, so I really want to make sure that the baby is around my family and my dad’s family, as much as she is around his.

Weekly Reflection 10/15

I have been helping my mom with a basketball league she volunteers with. It is run by different drug treatment programs and one way they help recovering addicts is by letting them play basketball. Each program forms a basketball team and they compete against other teams from other programs. Then there are championship games and it continues until there is one team who won the most. After the league is done, there is an award ceremony and it is over until next year when it starts again. My job at the games used to be helping my mom set up the gym, meaning cleaning and pumping the basketballs, and controlling the scoreboard and books. Now, I am in control of doing the same things but I also control the music. The programs are filled with people who are usually 18-45 year old African American men and they listen to hip-hop and some of the same music I listen to, so I play music as well. I really like doing this and helping in any way I can. My mom pays me for it too.

Reflection 10/15

Today was kind of relaxing because at the beginning of the class we wrote a 5 minute monologue about ourself and presented. Unfortunately, I was picked and I presented. At the beginning of the presentation, I was ok with the flow but once I added more stuff aside from what I wrote I struggled with the flow. According to the professor, I performed good but in fact I needed work with my pacing because I was going too fast. Later on, after the professor picked couple of more students to go presenting, they let us to do a free period while the professor and the assistant took one student by one student to check up on work and school.

Reflection

Another week has passed by in our college lives and all of my friends seem to be talking about their midterms and tests which is honestly stressing me out. I have papers and tests due later this month and it is all getting to me very quickly because I have to get a grip on my academic life. I did well on my Psychology test which was my first ever college test so that is actually pretty motivating. I’m trying to balance out my calendar at this point as I’d just like to stay on top of things and organized.

Weekly Reflection

I got a goose two days ago. Fully prepared for this winter. I took my first history test and managed to skip half the questions because I just didn’t remember the 160+ terms. I plan on actually studying for the next history test along with the next math test.

Enrichment #1

For my enrichment #1, I attend the Club fair at Baruch College. It was located in the gym in the main building. I went right after class which was about 12:30. I had an amazing time, there were many people there. The gym was almost full. I spoke too many members of different clubs. They had flyers and gave them to people after they talk to them. Some groups even had food to give out. I remember each group having a sign-up sheet. I had fun and got to learn more about the clubs. I’m looking forward to joining a group but next semester because this semester I’m focused on my school work and my job. Once I know how to manage my time will add a club to my schedule. I will be making a list of the clubs that caught my attention. Then start to pick my top three and see which one I enjoy the most.

Weekly Reflection

This week I have been practicing my math lessons and I think I’ve been getting better. I also underestimated the availability of the writing center and realized I should have booked a session way earlier. I didn’t think it would be that packed. I had my first essay due and I’m not really proud of it as I don’t have much experience writing but hopefully it gets better! I also went to rolling loud this weekend and am physically dead as I barely survived the mosh pits. But now school Is back and I must focus on my studies

Enrichment #2 (Academic)

For my second enrichment workshop, I decided to focus on academics and blog about the new exhibit at The New York Hall of Science. Even though I work there,  I took the time to explore the new exhibit (Art of the Brick) and learned how the idea came about. Art of the Brick’s creator, Nathan Sawaya, went from being a rather successful lawyer to committing all his time into lego art. He stopped his career as a lawyer and followed his passion. I was very inspired because I hope to also follow my passion and work in the industry that I am most passionate about. Art is not one of them; however, I am into marketing, and I am looking into either project management or account management. I learned that the art piece that is in the NY Hall of Science with the most lego pieces was the skeleton of the dinosaur (more than 80,000 lego pieces). I also learned that he does most of his modeling with pictures and smaller versions of the piece and had the pieces assembled to match the description. For example, he had one of the models wore a red dress, took a picture, painted the scenery, built the dress in a smaller version, then bigger version, then photoshop that lego dress onto the model’s body and had a scavenger hunt to find the object that is in the picture out on the museum floor. I think that is very creative. This also sparked many ideas I had to become a social entrepreneur because not only does it brings back the good old’ time, but it also motivated children and even adults to not hesitate to go after their passion. I realized that even though I am passionate about business, it doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be knowledgeable about different areas of focus also. I am always open to learn new things and share my knowledge with others. Attached is a picture that has me sitting on the bench right next to a life-sized lego person. These lego people on benches were also found in front of the White House where Barack Obama sat with one of the lego people and took the picture. I was very honored to know that I might have took the picture with the lego person where he might have sat to take the picture with one of the lego people also.
