Enrichment #2

For this enrichment assignment I chose to attend to a Baruch Women Volleyball match this Saturday, October 12. The match supposedly started at 10:00 AM, which I really don’t know  because I arrived late. The atmosphere was pretty quiet which really shocked me. I really thought there were going to be more people watching, to my surprise there were only few people watching. The Baruch team played very good because they had a good sportsmanship, despite the errors that their teammates made nobody would be mad or blaming on anyone. They won all sets, which was nice. Although there was a very intense moment when the team let go a bit, the away team started to catch them up, but in the end they got realized their mistakes and got serious about it again and won.

All the spikes were perfectly smacked, since they all passed the net and were points. The defense was also very good because they managed to work together as a team and their communication was also one of the main key to their win. Their serving were amazingly good since most if not all would hit the end lines, this will confuse the other team by making them think it will be out, but in reality it would land just in the tip of the line and make it their point.  It was very obvious that the Baruch team was way much stronger and better prepared than the team of Lehman College.

I really wanted to go to one of their matches since I really wanted to join the volleyball team, but I didn’t apply for a position at the beginning of the semester because I wasn’t in the country for tryouts. Maybe next year i’m going join the team.

Weekly reflection

This week I went out with my brother to buy winter coats. I went my brother because he has been longer here in New York than I have and know where to go and find better brands. Now that I go to the same college as my brother everything is easier because there are so many thing I can depend on him. This has made my homesickness slightly better, although I really miss my parents and my little sister so much.

Weekly reflection

Last week I had so many days off, which was pretty good, but also very bad at the same time. I had two exams which made me very nervous and scared. Both o the exams were breath taking, I felt like they were very hard. My college experience has been very good so far since all the classes are going well and I feel like I’m actually learning something. Days are passing by so fast that I haven’t still realized that already half of the semester has passed. This is so scary.

Week reflection 10/07-10/11

During this week on Monday I had two exams and I overstudied for it. I wasn’t very stressed about it but somehow I was tired and had runny nose the whole week before this. During the exam, I answered everything which was a good thing but at the same time I can not overestimate my grades because if I do, maybe when I get a lower grade than expected then I would be very disappointed. Again, we had Tuesday and Wednesday off in which I took to work. This month is going so fast since we are having days off in almost every week. And soon I’m going to have the midterms exam which is gonna be a little bit overwhelming.

Week reflection 09/30-10/04

This week we didn’t have school on Monday and Tuesday which we had a 5 day weekend in which it was extremely exciting but at the same time it wasn’t because I needed my job to schedule me for those days to work and apparently I ended up working more days rather than take it for off days. Sometimes I think about it when I have off days I rather use for something productive instead of staying at home and watching Netflix or sleeping the whole day. In my opinion, when I take off days  I don’t really like it because I don’t know what to do, is either stay at home or go out and spend money. This week was extremely exhausting and plus I had to make review sheets for next week’s exams.

Enrichment #2

Resume and Interview Seminar (AKPSI)

This was one of my professional enrichment workshops. There I went on with my highschool resume which I had not edited in around a year or two. It was…bad. I asked one of the brothers to review it and by the end of the review the paper was full of red marks. But I was happy about that. He talked with me about it afterwards and I got a lot of good pointers. It’s ironic really because to get into the frat you needed to include your resume, so I included my revised version after their seminar. In the end I didn’t get into the frat though but no stress. So anyway I learned about how I can even include my past internships, how to format the resume, and the 3 bullet point strategy. As for the interview portion, it was less one on one and more general information. I learned about how it’s fine to ask the interviewer for time to think, never knew you could ask that. While at the seminar I took notes, here are the notes I took:

  1. Talk to yourself.
  2. Doesn’t just have to be work history, can be personal projects.
  3. Eat before interview, arrive early.
  4. Tech interviews have like 5 rounds.
  5. Go to Glassdoor for sample interview questions.
  6. Memorize your resume.
  7. Everyone is nervous, so always smile, don’t rush into answers, and listen, also be happy.
  8. Ask personal questions, like seeing a fish photo, comment on it, try to make connections.
  9. People don’t want to work with a wall, get their name and remember them. Ask about interest outside of work for example.
  10. At the end, if they ask, any more questions? That’s your chance to ask a memorable question.
  11. If blanked out, take a sip of water, make a story.
  12. Don’t be afraid to pause in between questions, even ask for a moment to gather thoughts. Or worse case scenario, say you’ll get back to them.
  13. Questions get harder and harder as interview goes, sometimes they want you to say you don’t know. If you don’t know, you don’t know.
  14. Good questions to ask at end, can you tell Me about yourself? Look at their LinkedIn maybe.
  15. How’s the company’s culture? Every man for themself? Or everyone together?
  16. Can you show me around the office?
  17. Can you walk me through a day to day process? Put yourself in their shoes and think what question you would like to be asked.
  18. If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your college self?
  19. Overall, this is your time to take control, ask any question I want.
  20. LISTEN TO THEIR ANSWER.
  21. Apply to as many internships as you can. Start right now.
  22. Know my worth, don’t take an internship you don’t like.
  23. If you do take an internship you don’t like, use their interview for practice.
  24. How to say no, respond and say like thank you so much for the opportunity, but I have another, I would love to stay in touch for future possibilities.
  25. For cover letters, use a website template, as a brother for theirs to use as a template, use it to branch off a bit from your resume.
  26. Show that you put time in your cover letter, but not too much.
  27. Only put necessary things in resume, no fluff.

Nevertheless, it was an informative seminar which I’m glad I went to.

weekly reflection

Class was a  good way to get us more in the groove of things. We started to practice our monologues and it seems a little nerve wrecking. It gives us practice for when we start practicing our 2-3 minute monologues in front of the class. This past week has been pretty overwhelming because of my calculus and classical music exams but it is our first couple exams we take in those classes so I try not to stress it too much. It also teaches me that I need to be more prepared at least two weeks before an exam. I’m going to start dedicating a couple hours a day to each subject.

weekly reflection

My week went very quickly because we keep having days off. I had a great weekend because my boyfriend visited me for a few nights. He goes to college upstate so it took him about 5/6 hours on the bus to get to the city. I also had two tests that Monday,  so it was annoying having to study a little bit while my boyfriend was here. After he left Sunday afternoon, I studied a lot so I could be prepared for my tests the next day. I think I did really good on my Music in Civilization test and pretty decent on my Calculus test. I hope I receive the grades soon!

Weekly Reflection

College is going by really quickly and I can’t believe the semester is coming to an end soon. I am just really curious about how transfer credits work and how I can use them to not take some classes or when to use them or what electives to use them on. I’m also looking for clubs to join and I really want to join Team Baruch Or Student Government as it looks really fun and is interactive with the school. I also am starting to struggle a bit with calculus and am trying to find tutoring as well and I also want to look for internships at the SPARC Center which I’m gonna do soon.

Weekly Reflection

Another week has gone by in my college career and it is honestly going by so fast. We have just two more months of classes and then December is just finals. In this last week, I once again did not do much. While that is concerning, I’m not really complaining. I have a couple of papers due this month, one of them in the next few days so I have to get cracking. I’m hoping to visit the writing center later this week. I had a lot of fun this past week at school as I took advantage of my free time and went to events on the 2nd floor with my friends, as that is my favorite thing about Baruch.
