Creative Sharing Assignment

This is a short tutorial on how to Convert a Word Document into a PDF File on the MAC Operating System, “George Chun Creative Sharing“.

In creating this, i have used the “Jing” software as well as Power Point and Mac’s Screen Shots function. Using Jing and the Screen Shot function, i was able to take pictures on my screen and edit it as well. Jing allowed me to edit the screen shots with highlights as well as input arrows. Using these edited screenshots i first inputted them into the Power Point presentation. Once all the slides were made with the right picture in the slide, I once again used the “Jing” software to records the slides in motion manually while adding my voice. The hardest part i would say was getting the Audio right. Since i didn’t write anything down, i had multiple retakes. Once completed on Jing, i reviewed the video and uploaded it to this Blog site.

Cognitive Surplus Chapter 2, 3

These chapters shine a light towards a whole new way of interacting as a community and with its advantages to connect people all over the world.  What allows that is social networking sites such as Facebook. It doesn’t just stop there with social networks now but it continues all the way into ebook as well as e commerce, shopping and searches. With the term Web 2.0 being tossed around, it has made the web more interactive and productive.  Since Shirky talks about using our time more productively, these new advantages allows for that. We already can see the new technologies working its way into our classrooms and its just the start but with technological advances can come some disadvantages. I can’t help wonder what will soon follow.

Wiki

It seems in our society for the ball to start rolling, it takes a lot of time but once it does, it explodes. Wiki like wikipedia took a long time to build but now its taken off to a whole new level of contributors and viewers. I find it funny that anyone is pretty much able to add or make changes yet it is a pretty reliable source for information. Wikipedia uses tons of hyperlinks and also comes out as a top number 1 spot for lots of searches on a search engine. How information that can be altered by anyone still come out as a number 1 hit on a search engine is interesting.

I personally use the wikipedia in many cases for a quick answer because of my belief that the wikipedia is still pretty accurate. It has a very detailed format with hyperlinks to other pages for more information on related topics. I wonder how much longer wikipedia can stay as a reliable source or even stay on top of the list on search engines.  Is it because people are lazy to do research or is it that they are not informed that the wikipedia is not a credible source?

“Here Comes Everybody”

After reading the first 3 chapters of “Here Comes Everybody” by Clay Shirky, i was amazed at how much the internet’s function has changed and advanced. Yes the internet is a powerful tool and Shirky gives us examples of that with his stories, but it can also have a negative impact. However, I do truly believe that benefits can out weigh the cost with the internet.

I couldn’t stop thinking about when i first had the internet and used it pretty much just for research and instant messaging. Instant messaging is now in a truly more advanced way in which we can leave messages on a blog or a twitter and even be able to attach a file or picture.  With these advancement in the internet, i feel that Shirky is trying to tell us that the way we now interact and communicate, is a whole new “ecosystem”.

This new ecosystem is now how businesses and organizations communicate and is becoming part of the norm.  I feel that Shirky was stating that this new way of grouping and communication is shaping and affecting society as a whole. I do believe it is advancement in communication where as everything is more instant and more tailored to your own needs. We are now able to follow and keep up with the news, statuses and friends that we want to and can filter out whatever that is not important to us.

Privacy

It is true that ever since 9/11 secuirty has been stepped up dramatically in the United States and it very well does affect our privacy. However, i feel this method is neccessary as there is a real threat out there. Yes there is a privacy issue which makes us all feel like a suspect but until we can find a better way or prove that this system does not keep our citizens safe, I feel that this is necessary.

I joined the Marine Corps post 9/11 and i have been deployed to a combat zone in Iraq where i have seen my fellow Marines killed in action because of this threat. I am thankful enough to have returned home safetly but for those who are still out fighting the good fight, lets start by keeping our country safe and not have to prolong this already long war and bring our troops home.
