Welcome to my site on German-American Immigrant Theater in New York. Follow the rise and fall of the German community in our city from its humble beginnings in Kleindeutschland to its eventual decline in the Upper East Side. This site serves as the term project for Professor Debra Caplan’s class “Performing Immigration on Stage and Screen.”

This is by no means an exhaustive exploration of German-American theater traditions. I have failed to mention many of the  theaters, notable figures and events that are part of German theater history. Nevertheless, this site aims to paint the history of the German community in NYC, along with its theater traditions, in broad strokes. I hope you have as much fun reading through this site as I did in making it!

Special thanks to Kathryn Jolowicz, founder of the the Yorkville/Kleindeutschland Historical Society, who offered her expertise on the German community in Yorkville.
