Roundtable Discussion: Kazakhstan’s Policy Initiatives and Challenges

Aziz Burkhanov (MA 2003, University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas; MA 2009, Indiana University; PhD 2013, Indiana University) is an Assistant Professor at Nazarbayev University. Dr. Burkhanov’s research interests include national identity and language issues in post-Soviet Kazakhstan, media and public discourse, current political developments in Central Asia and public policy and governance in the region. At present, Dr. Burkhanov is working on a project exploring national identity policies of Kazakhstan and societal reactions expressed in the different linguistic realms of Kazakhstan.
Dr. Omer F. Baris received his doctorate in economics with a specialization in public economics from Georgia State University in 2012. After teaching economics at the Public Policy department of the Georgia Institute of Technology and at the Economics department of Georgia State University, both located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA between 2010 and 2013, he has joined the Graduate School of Public Policy at Nazarbayev University as in 2013. He taught graduate and undergraduate level classes including Game Theory, Microeconomic Theory and Microeconomics for Public Policy, Applied Political Economy, and Economics, Philosophy and Public Policy. His fields of research include microeconomic theory, bargaining and game theory with a special focus on anti-corruption, political economy and asymmetric information in public economics. –
