Call me a paranoid schizophrenic but i believe the broadcast media beefs up the upcoming weather conditions for viewers and listeners to spend money. It is possible that media outlets are paid by a group of some sort to over exaggerate how much snow or rain will fall.
This previous weekend we experienced a minimal amount of snow. According to myself , i would say that the amount of snow that fell was actually way less than what was predicted. For instance, i watched the fox 5 weather man assuring residents of NYC that the storm would be worse than the one we experienced in 2010. That same night i was driving around and there really was certainly nothing to compare to 2010.
Furthermore, for this recent “blizzard” i received multiple notifications on my cellphone and for hurricane sandy i only received one . How about that?
Maybe i am paranoid but i believe that the media exaggerates the weather for consumers to spend money. I know it is good to stimulate businesses and such but deception is not good. And if you agree with my paranoia then you must know where im coming from.
I work at Pearsons Hardware, a private business on 5th ave and 73st in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. My boss is religious and during the winter he prays for snow. Fox 5 answered his prayers.
Do you think it the media over exaggerates weather for hidden reasons?
I believe it is part of the capitalism ethos of the society we live in. Big media stations are owned by big pockets, that have investments that benefit every which way from consumers purchasing products. Fact not fiction.
I really do believe that they exaggerated way too much. I work at a grocery store as a cashier and people were just going crazy, stocking up on everything for not such a deadly amount of snow. I thought the snow looked beautiful but I’m sure people spent way more than they needed to. There were lines from the front to back of the store. Employees did not get a break! I really hope there isn’t any other “natural disaster” that needs to happen anytime soon.
