Desire led to Tragedy, be simple!!

For the whole story of “Candide”, I concluded that Desire led to tragedy. Candide wanted to be with Cunegonde and then was kicked out. People wanted more property and territory and then led to wars. Or others did not satisfied with their current situation and then led to fighting or stealing and so on. After Candide was kicked out castle, he suffered a lot as he was caught by others and escaped again and again. He met his tutor Pangloss and saw how he died and later got to know he was alive. He got to know the miserable experiences from Cunegonde and others later. He also experienced cheating, fighting and helpless. However, he still believed things would get better as time went on. As last, everyone got disappointed and gave up trying. As Candide met the ugly Cunegonde, as all of his money was cheated by a man, as they had nothing but a small farm, they gave up trying to do anything. However, as Candide heard the story from a man who lived very happy with his family who only owned a small farm, he got to know the truth. Everything will be better and be the best if you are satisfied with yourself and current situation, you will be very happy and satisfy. After that, all of them did farming on their farm and lived happily together.

I have learnt from this interesting story that the author was trying to tell people to not desire too much, if they did, lots of tragedies would happen. If you want to live happily, just be simply. Do not let yourself to be too much complicated. Everything would be happening very well and the world would finally be the best if you are simple. Sometimes people desire too much, and then try to think of many ways to get what they want and lead to miserable outcome. Author is trying to let people understand this simple and important truth through this story. However, how many people will understand it and can do it!!

Voltaire’s Jokes Can Time Travel

After our last class session, I’ve come to the conclusion that Voltaire wrote Candide, Or Optimism as a sharp critique of society. I feel like he was really taking shots at people who don’t have the courage to be more open minded; people who would rather let their religion do all the thinking for them. Because of that, I believe he adds “optimism” to the title because it reinforces his idea that blind faith is worse than no faith at all. You can really see this idea in the first part of Candide, when he is kicked out of the Baron’s castle and the unfortunate events that occur to him afterwards. From his “STRANGER DANGER!” scene to Cunegonde’s #resurrection, Candide’s optimism never falters (he can thank his philosophy master Pangloss for that). What really drives the point home is the fact that the only characters who get resurrected in this story are the ones who have caused Candide the most grief: Pangloss gave him a flawed view of the world with his blind optimism; the Baron represents the absurdity tradition poses by being someone who still believes in the rules of the class system (and lineage rights). Lastly, the relationship he had with Cunegonde represents the shallow traits every human shares and the fickle tendencies of “love.” It took three important people to die and be revived for Candide to realize that the world isn’t as great as he thought it as. But why should we care about what happens to Candide?

Ultimately, what makes Candide such a huge success is it’s universality  it’s ability to be understood by the masses (and not just the philosophy snobs). Candide is Voltaire’s representation of the human race. Candide is easily swayed; he reflects all of the ideas his the people around him represent. He’s optimistic to a fault and he’s shallow. The worst part is that things never get better for Candide. He still ends up with his girl (even though he didn’t really want her anymore) and “lives happily ever after.” What kind of message is a depressing ending like that supposed to send? Maybe he’s trying to say that people should rather depend on themselves than speculate over the actions of an omnipotent being. Maybe he wanted people to realize that a big part of life is it’s harshness? Or maybe he was just bored and he needed to spice his life up by taking shots at everybody? Whatever motivated him must have been real important if it caused him to right a whole story about it and consequently caused me to write about that.

AWKWARD

Was Voltaire’s piece Candid or Optimism a source of inspiration for the creation of Dora and Boot’s love affair? Or do writers just assume that females love monkeys? Ponder on that. I found chapter 16 to be quite amusing. Candide hears the cries of two naked women running away from two monkeys, so he decides to put his magical superhero cape on and save them from the villains, by firing his rifle to kill them.  Feeling accomplished, he looks over at the two ladies who were already weeping over the bodies of their beloved monkey-lovers. Come again? What just happened? Can it get anymore awkward than that? I think not. Just kidding, the next day Candide and his pal Cacambo find themselves tied down and surrounded by fifty naked men who were preparing to turn them into a feast. Yum? To top things off, Candide has the audacity to recite his favorite line “All is for the best, I agree”. His calmness at this point is ridiculous.

Funny enough, to my surprise, after a long speech, they ultimately end up being freed, treated with politeness, were offered some hoes, and were given refreshments. The chapter ends once again with Candide’s optimistic cries “But after all, it seems that uncorrupted nature is good, since these folk, instead of eating me, showed me a thousand kindnesses as soon as they knew I was not a Jesuit”.

Overall, I knew it wasn’t going to happen due to the fact that a bunch of chapters followed this one, so it wouldn’t make sense for it to occur, but am I the only one that was hoping Candide got turned into a stew and eaten? He is the epitome of boring.

Simple, Happy!

At the end of the novel, Candide, Cunégonde, Cacambo, Pangloss, Martin, and the old woman settle into a farm. Their lives on the farm are simple, but they are not happy because they feel the lives are too simple and not the lives they want. After they meet a farmer who lives simple and enjoys his life, they start to work hard without thinking about the philosophical speculation, and everybody learns a skill to support their lives.

I think that this is a happy ending although it is very simple. At lease they don’t suffer hunger and live as slaves even though they don’t fulfill their desires or become very successful people. Compare to them, many people live outside their garden are still suffering.

Most people are suffering from the problems which caused by their desires. People are always looking for better lives. Money, security, peace, leisure are people’s desires. I think Voltaire want to express that people to feel happier when they are satisfied with their lives and don’t always think about the useless things. Sometimes, a simple thing can make people happy. However, I also think that if people just satisfy with their current situations, people would not improve.

Do you feel satisfied of your current situation?

Unending Warfare

As we all know, the book “Candide” is a satire which the author used ordinary words to express the evil side of French society during that time period. In the story, a man—ought to be the most honest and simplicity person—had said,” I have killed my old master, my friend, my brother-in-law; I am the best man in the world, and here are three men I’ve killed already, and two of the three were priests.” His words demonstrated that Candide came down with the bad atmosphere of the society. In chapter 22, he asked a scholar, “you doubtless think everything is for the best in the physical as well as the moral universe, and that nothing could be otherwise than as it is?” The scholar replied, “I believe nothing of the sort. I find that everthinkg goes wrong in our world; that nobody knows….what he’s doing or what he ough to be doing, and that outside of mealtimes, which are cheerful and congenial enough, all the rest of the day is spent in useless quarrels,….it’s on unending warfare.”

In the reality, from ancient time untill now, his words reflected the truth of our real world. During our mealtimes, people disguised themselves as cheerful and enjoyable. Stealthily, they play a deep game. This vicious cycle of hatred goes around untill today and never end. Not many of us have sufficient experiences protect ourselves. To sum up, we as student, since our information came from searching on internet, hearing from others, and reading news, we do not know whether a piece of information is real or not.

An early day version of Bad Luck Brian?

This whole story is just one big bad day for Candide. Throughout the story it’s just one thing after another, such as when he tries to save the women that were being chased by the monkeys, kills the monkeys and they wind up crying over the dead monkeys, Candide just can’t catch a break. So they continue going on down the road, and if it weren’t enough for their food to run out, but their horses die, oh but wait a canoe is there to save the day, after a while in the river Bad Luck Brian strikes again and they smash the canoe. I do have to give Candide credit for being so optimistic through this story though, going through all of this, must put a toll on someone psychologically.

Bad Luck Brian

Even when losing all of his money just to get his friend back, and not getting angry or upset about it is quite a good look out on life.  Candide and his friend continue through to where they are headed when he becomes ill, having to stop, two doctors catch a glimpse at his last diamond. Forcing their practice on him, which only makes him more ill, Candide winds up losing the last jewel. Me personally I don’t think I could keep this outlook after going through all of this. Candide goes from being rich, having all this gold and jewels, to being poor again and having nothing and almost dies trying.

Murder Murder

I was apart of group 3 yesterday and one of the sentences that we put up for Candide is,” when the going gets tough, it gets tougher”  We put that statement for Candide to illustrate his luck, nonetheless, I’ve came to know Candide as a man with a bag of misfortune.

Candides’ misfortune is exemplified in the beginning of Chapter 15.  The chapter opens up with the Jesuit baron which is the brother of his long lost love Cunegonde; the Jesuit is sharing a personal story of how he escaped death as a young lad with his sister, the irony here is as the Jesuit is taking a stand against Candide regarding his sister he faces his death from the hand of Candide.

They say what goes around comes around,  Candide tries to change his karma by rescuing two naked women; he fails.  However, Candide was hopeful as his name implies, but sadly when he goes to examine the monkeys that he thought were going to hurt the ladies, he realizes they were their lovers.  Candide has terrible luck and the rest of the reading he is faced with many more ups and downs, he has a Candide approach with all situations but everything flops.  Poor Candide.

Does the media over exaggerate weather for hidden reasons?

Call me a paranoid schizophrenic but i believe the broadcast media beefs up the upcoming weather conditions for viewers and listeners to spend money. It is possible that media outlets are paid by a group of some sort to over exaggerate how much snow or rain will fall.

This previous weekend we experienced a minimal amount of snow. According to myself , i would say that the amount of snow that fell was actually way less than what was predicted. For instance, i watched the fox 5 weather man assuring residents of NYC that the storm would be worse than the one we experienced in 2010. That same night i was driving around and there really was certainly nothing to compare to 2010.
Furthermore, for this recent “blizzard” i received multiple notifications on my cellphone and for hurricane sandy i only received one . How about that?

Maybe i am paranoid but i believe that the media exaggerates the weather for consumers to spend money. I know it is good to stimulate businesses and such but deception is not good. And if you agree with my paranoia then you must know where im coming from.

I work at Pearsons Hardware, a private business on 5th ave and 73st in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. My boss is religious and during the winter he prays for snow. Fox 5 answered his prayers.

Do you think it the media over exaggerates weather for hidden reasons? Some snow

“Candide, or Optimism”

“while Candide, the baron, Pangloss, Martin, and Cacambo were telling one another their stories, while they were disputing over the contingent or non-contingent events of this universe, while they were arguing over effects and cause, over moral evil, over the consolations available to one in Turkish galley.” This exposes that they faced cruel realistic world after they left the castle. Candide was whip many times, and was forced to left Cunegonde, but he always had someone to help him to spend his worse time. Pangloss was Master, but he was hanged and burned. Fortunately, he saved by surgeon, then become a slave. The baron was being a wealth people, but he was force to work in galley after he swim with a Christian to be found naked with a young Moslem. Sum up, they were almost face death, but they learned how to survive in the different environments. There is a sentence, ” God closes the door, but he still leave the window for you.”

The characters realized the basic truth in life after they met the old good man. When they asked the old good man who had been strangled. The good man told them that he had never care and ignored it. He just did not listen to the news from others and satisfied with sending the fruits of his garden to be sold there. At the end, Pangloss said that  “when man was put into the garden of Eden, he was put there ut operaretur eum, so that he should work it, this proves that man was not born to take his ease.” This told us that they need to satisfied our current  circumstance and don’t be lazy. It would have easy life.
