Final questions

1) What type of attribute can we give the protagonist in the Tattooer and why? (support using text)

2) In Kafka’s the metamorphosis why is it important that we hear what the protagonist is thinking and trying to communicate?

The markets

At this time I am deciding to write about the stock markets across the globe.  I have been an investor for 4-5 years and I now begin to realize that reality isn’t key, what people perceive is important.  My qualm with perception is that what someone perceives doesn’t have to be the truth, Europe has a record high unemployment level but if we are to look at that stock market you’d think things are awesome.  Better yet, I take a look at  America and the Job report, the terrible thing is the job report says that unemployment is at a level seen before the crisis in 08′.  The reality is that I do not look around and see businesses performing that way; my father owns a mechanic shop for 36 years and again I will say that I do not see business in the same light as I did on 08′.  Nonetheless, we see the stock markets of America at an all time high.  What do the stock markets really symbolize? Do the markets symbolize manipulation?

She was stepping on toes, the stepping was the catalyst

In the opening of notes of a native son, I was drawn into the authors malaise. I immediately reflected on the idea that as a nation we just came to supporting equality across the board 60 years ago. The reality is those reforms only began to be respected 20 years ago but there are still many sociological race problems. I saw how James Baldwin lost his innocence in his tale, he tried to keep his cool but he soon lashed out. This quote ” She was stepping on their toes, indeed she was, all over the nation.” links directly to what was happening with African Americans at the time, this quote likes to the metamorphosis that occurred within Baldwin.

The black widow.

The reading that I’m going to speak about is the tattooer; this short reading was filled with passion, well, one can say that there isn’t passion but I feel that there was.  Some of this passion was seen in Seikichi’s insatiable desire to be put in situations where he can delve into his sadistic interest, more importantly his passion was seen in the art work that he did on his clients.

Seikichi enjoyed the work in the line of tattooing for  a specific reason, this reason is because he had the opportunity to watch others shrivel in pain;  Seikichi was passionate about this part of his work, so passionate, there was a scene he was seen putting more pressure or shading in the tattoo just to make sure he evoked the emotion out of his clients that got his clock ticking.  LOL, I did find this creepy but he is waking up every morning and doing what he loves to do; he is a true Sadistic bastard.

The passion that was immense was exemplified in his art work, I understand because I have a tattoo my self and before I got that tattoo I made sure that it was a piece of work that meant something to me; I made sure that it invigorated my soul and once I had something on my heart that did that I went to get my skin worked on.///   The reason why I’m focusing on this aspect is because in the last scene he tells the girl that he has put his soul into her and that made me re read and gain understanding.  I believe what he meant was this tattoo is something I’ve been thinking about and it truly means something to me, more importantly; he makes a statement about the tattoo (which is a black widow) “that now all men will be her victim.” this is important.  In the times that Seikichi was around there was nothing new about geishas, however, it is said that they hold disease etc.and the black widow was known to kill or cause harm to its victim after mating, basically that means that the geisha or whore can do the same thing to her mate through venereal disease.  So, besides the symbolism in the tattoo regarding the womens employment, there is also a metaphor to Seikichi’s statement, he said that he poured out his soul.  His soul is tainted due to the lifestyle he lived.  He lived in the middle of the city where the rich spent money, seeked geishas and enjoyed themselves, this lifestyle was said to leave to moral corruption, could Seikichi’s soul be corrupted due to his surrounding? Furthermore, he practices harming those who he gets in contact with for his own benefit, the same way a black widow would do its mate.  There is a parallel between all 3 and that parallel can be seen as sadism.wda1454l 93px-Black_Widow_Spider_Eating_Something

1. To choose or be in the habit of choosing as more desirable or as having more value: prefers coffee to tea.
I feel that there is an integral statement in the reading Bartleby The Scrivener, that statement is, I would Prefer not to; this statement isolates an  action that humans can do and that would be their god given right to think for themselves. The definition of prefer is: to choose or be in the habit of choosing as more desirable or as having move value ex) prefers coffee or tea.  This statement that is used in Bartleby encompasses many of the readings that I’ve done in this class thus far, a common ethos in a majority of the readings are the ability or the benefit of the main character making choices for themselves, or learning to make their own choices; this is recently seen in the Declaration of Independence where the founding fathers have the right to think for themselves and the decide that they would prefer not to be a colony under British rule. I feel that Bartleby is enlightened the same way how the founding fathers were enlightened and the same way how an individual like Candide became enlightened. It’s not that Bartleby isn’t doing his job, he is, just what he signed up for, Bartleby does nothing more and nothing less.

I was apart of group 3 yesterday and one of the sentences that we put up for Candide is,” when the going gets tough, it gets tougher”  We put that statement for Candide to illustrate his luck, nonetheless, I’ve came to know Candide as a man with a bag of misfortune.

Candides’ misfortune is exemplified in the beginning of Chapter 15.  The chapter opens up with the Jesuit baron which is the brother of his long lost love Cunegonde; the Jesuit is sharing a personal story of how he escaped death as a young lad with his sister, the irony here is as the Jesuit is taking a stand against Candide regarding his sister he faces his death from the hand of Candide.

They say what goes around comes around,  Candide tries to change his karma by rescuing two naked women; he fails.  However, Candide was hopeful as his name implies, but sadly when he goes to examine the monkeys that he thought were going to hurt the ladies, he realizes they were their lovers.  Candide has terrible luck and the rest of the reading he is faced with many more ups and downs, he has a Candide approach with all situations but everything flops.  Poor Candide.

Thomas Hobbs the great English philosopher stated that human nature is naturally wicked, furthermore, Hobbs believed that human life is nasty, brutish and short. Well, If I didn’t have any other experiences of the world besides the reading of  “A Modest Proposal” by Dr. Jonathan Swift, I’d swiftly sign up for that school of thought without any recourse.  Nonetheless, the reading was brutal and I’d assume that Dr. Jonathan Swift was a very wealthy man because of how he treats the poor; Dr. Swift heard the cries for help from his common man, he offered help, but his help didn’t come with benevolence.

I think from the exordium Dr. Swift heard the cry from the common man, however, the help he was offering was to extinguish the poor cast of society that wasn’t producing.  I believe his style was Nazi with a twist of cannibalism and capitalism served cold.  The reason why I am disgusted with Dr.Swift is because he wanted to serve children on dinner plates, as if they’re veal.  The bottom line falls down to the school of thought from Thomas Hobbs; human nature is naturally wicked, for Hobbs his school of thought definitely did win in the 18th century in Ireland.
