One thing I’ve improved on so far this semester is I’ve begun to analyze more in my responses to our readings. Earlier in the semester I would summarize the readings instead of analyzing. Now I think I am doing a better job of analyzing the text. One area of improvement for me would be to participate more in our group discussions. Having a dialogue with the class is very important, especially since we only meet once a week, so participation is definitely something I am hoping to improve upon throughout the rest of the semester.

Over the course of the semester I was able to refine my skills for identifying significant points and references in literature. This class has forced me to read into the lines and see the story behind the story. What is beautiful is that you can never be wrong, if your interpretation of what the author wrote is different from the author’s, thats perfectly fine; introspection is valuable and can show a lot about yourself and how you think of the story. When it comes to reading, however, I strive to gain the ability to read with a greater consciousness. Many of these readings are extremely descriptive, sometimes too descriptive, and I might lose track and space out as I am reading. This is really frustrating and can really break the flow of a story. So I’m really just trying to ensure a better consciousness as I read so that this doesn’t happen.
I think Muneeb makes a very valuable point, we can all always push to have more dialogue with our peers. Being able to see a story from different vantage points is invaluable. Each and every person has a different background and set of experiences that may make a story relate differently to themselves. Talking different people may help in gaining that sort of outwards perspective.

I too came to find this too. At first, like you, I would skim through the passage and get the just the general concept of the reading but I soon found to actually enjoy the reading and naturally try to further analyze the story. As for participation in class, I would suggest you prepare beforehand and make an effort to have some ideas in your mind coming in.
