Reading 1

It was interesting reading the first chapter of <The Language of New Media> written by Lev Manovich. I was impressed by the logic that Lev Manovich states, which was the new media was new because it’s “just in time”. Also, there was another term “culture industry” that I have known for the first time, created by Theodor Adorno in the 1930s.

Basically, an industry made of culture is beyond my imagination since culture is invisible and untouchable, though it influences everyone subconsciously. People in different regions grow up with different values as well as different preferences, also, they are changing as time goes by.

In my opinion, there is a close connection between new media and the “culture industry” since new media can act as an important medium to give people an idea about what is culture and what is changing now. While new media illustrates the culture, the changes in culture also gives its variety and refreshment. Nowadays, most people can satisfy basic living necessity and this allows them to have time and money to understand mentally demand. This change in the “cultural industry” provide tons of opportunities for new media to explore, thus stimulating its creativeness at present and in future.

New media needs to interact with the “culture industry” at every moment to stay as the production of time. In this era of advanced technology, big data and interactions between inventors and potential consumers making new media more attractive and have more versions than it used to be. The increasing varieties in it enrich people’s life entertainment, especially the visual joy. Take the VR as an example, it enables people to experience the most real scenes without leaving home. It satisfies the needs of office workers who are too busy to go travel, and the desires of game players who want to experience the vivid game world. The most amazing thing is that VR brings consumers to view an imagination world beyond reach, such as scene in the universe.

Now the environment is a more and more open place for individuals to express their interests, thus making new thoughts happen, and I’m looking forward to see what will be further develop in the world of new media.
