How We Start Our Digital Essay!!!

By this time, our group has everything planned out already. We have finished a quarter of the scenes and have divided the rest of them among us. Well, it’s my first time using Adobe Flash so I was fearing that I can’t handle the work. However, after Suzan taught me,  I become more familiar with the it. I decided to spend the coming weekend to finish my part and hopefully I can finished them on time to send them to Suzan by Sunday morning. Suzan will be putting all the parts together which require a lot of work and time. And she has been contributing a lot to help us finish the project together. One problem that we are still having is the background music is still undecided. Hoping to come to an conclusion by this week 🙂 Good luck on your digital essay and have fun, my fellow classmates!

Ideas For the Digital Essay!!!

For the digital essay I am working with Suzan and Vivian on the poem “Good Mirrors Are Not Cheap”. Suzan has already have this idea of how to start the video, and we are still discussing how to end the video. I think since I am doing the poem ” Contact Lenses” for paper#3 and it somehow shares a common message as “Good Mirrors Are not Cheap” message. I would like to combine the two poems in the video. For instance, Suzan mentioned that the main character is being surrounded with lots of mirrors around her that she can’t tell which one is her truth self. And I would like to add that then she takes off her glasses and puts on the contact lenses. As a result she sees much clear and now she doesn’t care anymore about her appearance for what others think is not important. What’s important is that she knows who she really is and just be herself.

Also aftering reading the last stanza, I want the last scene to be a man who is a glassmaker and he is in his room making a new mirrors with a thought in his mind, “hmm, who is the next girl to deceive?”

Working on Paper#3!!!!

Hi, everyone! It is Saturday morning and I am trying to start my rough draft for paper#3. I am planning to write about the poem “Contact Lenses” by Audre Lorde. The reason is that I recently started wearing contact lenses and I think I can understand how Audre Lorde feel about wearing contact lenses. I initially had an idea in my mind. However, after doing some research about the poem, I am now lost in confusion and try to get my thoughts together again. On Wednesday, after discussing with my partner, we came to a conclusion that we are going to focus on how society changes our original view on this world and sharps us to view the world differently. However, the research I found analysis the poem a little differently. The poem is more about the ethic and methodological problems. It talks about the women’s place in society and church. Women were being discriminate, however, they were fighting back to have a position in society. I guess there is a connection between my idea and the research. I hope I can come up with a interesting thesis for this poem 🙂

Cannot wait to make the Video!!!

OMG!!! I totally forgot to do this blog!!! I guess I am so into Spring Break ! I didn’t realize we have a blog due for last Friday until my friend remained me this morning. Anyways, I still wanted to post this blog for I really look forward to this fun project.

Over the past week, I was searching for short video clips and ideas online. And now I have many interesting ideas in my mind and I cannot wait show them in my video! However, I am still undecided which poem I am going to work on. I still have to work that out with my partner. Since this is my first video project, I would like to do my best and try to make the best of it. I feel both nervous and excited for this project. I remember when the first time I heard that we have to do a video project, there was a panic in my heart. I thought it will be very difficult and I actually didn’t want to do this. The fear has gone away a little and I have little confident now. And I really hope with Luke’s help, this project would become easy and fun to me.

This is one of the video I found. I think it’s very creative. The theme is about “the power of communication.”

 Enjoy! http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/Jnu9KEzm8Xo/

Enjoy rest of the Break  🙂

Experience Happiness From Love

In the two short stories we read “Hills Like White Elephants” and “The Birth-mark”. Characters Jig and Georgiana do depict a uniform view of how people experience happiness that is to attain happiness by making their love ones  happy. Both characters are willing to do anything, even though it is something they don’t enjoy doing, to please their love ones. In the “Hills Like White Elephants”, Jig does not want to have abortion from the facts that she keeps drinking to calm herself down and keeps asking if she really has to do it to make her “boyfriend” happy. And in the end of the story I believe that she would do it if it would make him happy.

In “The Birth-mark” Georgiana is afraid to do the experiment knowing that there is a danger, but she wants to make her husband happy.Since her husband despises the birth mark on her face and wants to get rid of it, Georgiana would take the risk.

Another similarity is both stories took place in the nineteen century when women didn’t have much power in society. Because women were inferior to the men, they were depended on the men both mentally and financially. So women wanted to please their husband and they would do whatever it takes to make the men happy. In both story, Jig and Georgiana care more about their love ones’ opinion than their own, and they are afraid to resist.

The difference between Jig’s happiness and Georgiana’s happiness is Jig’s happiness is attain when her “boyfriend”loves her. She is willing to get abortion because she believes that is the only way the her “boyfriend” would love her again and this is selfish love. Georgiana’s happiness is attain when her husband is happy. She doesn’t care if she is risking her live, Georgiana wants her husband to be happy and ask for no other return.

Setting Goals to Achieve leads to Happiness.

Happiness can be attained by setting goals and working toward to achieve them. We become motivated, empowered, and excited when we have a goal to achieve whether it is short term or long term. We feel life becomes meaningful and full with hope when we have a goal. Of course the goals have to be desirable and attainable so we won’t give up too fast. While pursuing the goal, we can gain happiness by enjoying process such as overcoming obstacles in the way, sharing small step of success with others and becoming confident with supports from others. In the movie, “Best in Show” the five entrants all have the same goal that is to win the prestigious dog show “Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show”. They take time and energy to train their dogs and they all enjoy the process. Before the competition, the dog owners are very nervous about the challenge that is to come; however, they are also happy that they have a chance to achieve their goal. For example, Gerry and Cookie Fleck and their dog Winky, although they encounter many problems before the competition, such as being force to sleep in the hotel’s storage room for they don’t have enough money, they are still very happy that they have each other’s supports during the competition. Another point I want to make is success is the key to happiness. Having able to achieve a goal in the end would bring us more happiness. In the movie just before the final, Cookie dislocates her knees and Gerry has to take over for her. Gerry is really nervous for he is afraid that he won’t do a great job, however, with Cookie’s support Gerry gains confidence in doing it and ultimately Winky wins. The couples are extremely happy for all their hard works have been rewarded. Since the goal is very meaningful to them the final victory brings more to happiness to them.

In chapter 2 of Freud’s text, Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud tells us a story of a child’s game “disappearance and return” which becomes known as “fort da” to explain his idea of “pain/pleasant”. Freud observes an eighteen months old child who repeatedly throws a wooden reel, with a piece of string attach to it, away from him while saying the word “fort” (go away) and when he brings it back he would say “Da” (there). Freud believes the child’s action is a relief of anger for his mother who always leaves him alone. The child doesn’t want his mother to leave him and wants to be the master of the situation; so he replaces an object in place of people. He sends the object (her mother) away and brings it back whenever he wants to. Freud analyzes action saying “the answer will perhaps be forthcoming that the departure must be played as the necessary prelude to the joyful return.” The child gains happiness when he sees the toy return even though it would be unpleasant for him to throw it away in the first place. I think Freud is trying to explain that we are just like the child who appreciates things more after we experienced the pain of losing it while gaining happiness as the outcome of the painful process.

Similar to the story of “Allegory the Cave”, the prisoner has been brought up with the belief that the shadows are the only realities. However, after he is released from the cave and sees things in a more real and more correct way, he would appreciate the true reality more than any other people who have been brought up in this true reality. The cost of this different view was years of suffering in the cave, but he enjoys the outcome of the painful process for he gains happiness.

Freud is portraying a happiness that is attained after experiencing a painful process. We might think that this kind of happiness would be more realistic for we use to believe in “no pain, no gain”, however, are we really going to attain true happy with a painful and unpleasant process?
