Response Paper 4

Different people have different views of happiness. Earning and experiencing happiness vary from people to people. Both short stories “Hills Like White Elephants” and “The Birth-mark” demonstrate particular person’s beliefs about happiness. These stories represent happiness by its characters Aylmer and the man. Aylmer from “The Birth-mark” and the man from “Hills Like White Elephants” depict anxiousness and wishes to obtain happiness in their own format.

Both of the characters show their passionate desire to be happy. Aylmer founds his happiness by removing his wife’s birth-mark from her cheek. Even though, he admires Georgiana’s beauty; he monopolizes about the birth-mark. He does not learn to appreciate the fact that his wife idolized this mark as her charm. Similarly, the man persuades his girlfriend to have abortion in order to get his own happiness. His carelessness about Jig’s opinion and hardship of convincing her to do abortion notify his determination of happiness. Next, these characters symbolize man dominant society. Aylmer was succeeded to convert Georgiana to get rid of her charm. As if it is dangerous, but she does not care.In similar, the man induced Jig to abort her tiny white elephant. Additionally, she is not conscious about the situation afterwards. Here, these circumstances draw pictures of victim women who are willing to do anything for their significant others without expressing their anticipation.

However, both of these persons are seeking for happiness; their purposes of being happy are contrasting. Aylmer thinks happiness is perfection. He put his best effort to make his wife perfect by removing her birth-mark in terms of achieving happiness. But, because of his impatience and thought of perfection he loses his wife. It does not grab his attention that being perfect could be the cause to become unhappy also. Aylmer confirmed that judging the loved ones and attempting to convert them as perfectionists can harm individual’s own life. On the other hand, the man wins happiness through his pleasure. He evokes his youngness by rejecting his beautiful future child. Furthermore, he believes that he can enlighten his life through exploring and enjoying. In fact, he considers himself having a bright future; if Jig agrees to have abortion. At this point, the unborn baby is a barrier to get his own pleasure.

In conclusion, illustration of these two characters specifies that people carry out different opinions about happiness. Whether it is about being perfect or getting pleasure, everyone has their own means to become happy.

Response Paper 3: Option2

“Hills Like White Elephants” is a short story which was written by Ernest Hemingway. When I first saw the title of this story, I assumed that it is an illustration of natural beauty of any particular place. Once I started reading it, I thought my assumption was right because opening sentence of this story depicts the view of the valley of the Ebro. Then, Hemingway stated about a train station and outside the train station bar an American man and woman were having beers as well as waiting for train. This description gave me idea that my first conception was wrong. However, I realized it is a nice romantic story.

As the couple drinks, the woman tells that man that the hills remind her of “white elephants.” In this case, I was wondering what symbolizes white elephants. Furthermore, I noticed from the conversation of this couple that they are trying to decide something. At this point, the man was convincing the women but she was against the decision. In addition, I identify the woman was worried that can this decision solve the problem or is it going to affect their future relationship? But, the man trying to make her comfortable by saying that their life will be happy as it was before if she agrees with him. Here, I felt that she was forced to agree with him which is the reason she said that she does not care about herself. At the end of the story, I observed her depressive and helpless face saying that “There’s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine.”

After reading the entire story, my view says that Hemingway determines the issue of abortion in a certain relationship. I think it explains the youthful nature of a man who does not want any child because he still believes that he has to explore his world and get his own pleasure. This is the reason he is persuading his girlfriend to have abortion that he can move forward in his life. According to my opinion, poor woman is dreaming about her child that is why she is using metaphors like “white elephants” which symbolizes a new born child. In fact, she states beautiful scenery of Ebro which I think the symbol of happiness to have a child. As she realized that her boyfriend is favoring to have abortion and putting his best effort to urge her, she said “Would you please please please please please please please please stop talking?” I also detected that Hemingway demonstrated the girl’s tragic expression against abortion by drawing a view of dry side of the valley.

The conclusion of this story is that the couple is waiting for arrival of the train. Unfortunately, they cannot bring any solution through their conversation because both of their points of views are different regarding abortion. I think Hemingway decided to leave this situation to her readers what will be their future. At last, I can picture the girl will decide to give birth to her child and the man will continue his pleasure game.

Response Paper 2 By Zannatul Mehzabin

Is Freud’s idea of “Children’s Play” only a psychological term? What was the logic behind Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” ? All these questions can be asked by any person who has read the book Beyond the Pleasure Principle and The republic. In Beyond Pleasure Principle, Freud elaborated different characteristics and stages of human life in psychological language. Plato displayed his philosophical presentation in The Republic by demonstrating the truth of human life.
Freud’s defined various terminologies but among these terms “ Children Play” plays a vital role in human life. He regarded this theory as a subject of pleasure principle which anticipates all the constraints of real life. Besides explaining behavior of older people towards the young children, it also talks about intellectual development of children. It depicts how typical norms of our society are obstructing learning process of children. Freud stated how he observed eighteen months old boy attempting to say fort (“gone”) and da (“there”) by repeating his own invented activity which is disappearance and reappearance of a wooden reel attached to a string. According to Freud’s point of view, the second act gives most pleasure to a child but at the same time he was deprived from pleasure by departure of his mother. Instead of giving a joyful experience of regaining the toy, this activity makes a child to recover the situation that he found unpleasant. Freud considered that this action does not provide a complete satisfaction which a child supposed to get. Therefore, “Children Play” is more structured in the formation of a child’s development.
Both of the writers, Freud and Plato explained the reality of human life. “Children Play” refers to organize children development and “Allegory of the Cave” illustrates the crucial part of human lives. In addition. Both texts are related to happiness. “Allegory of the Cave” resists enlightenment which hinders happiness and “ Children Play” draws an example that how a child achieves happiness through his own performance. These topics are also linked in case of development of society.  In “Allegory of the cave” Plato specified about prisoners who were chained in a cave, unable to turn their heads, all they  can see is the wall of the cave and behind them fire was burning which forms prisoners  as illiterates . Freud portrayed the restricted life of a child where he obeyed orders about not touching various things and not going into certain rooms which interrupts his progress and ability in terms of learning. Obstruction of progress of a child and illiteracy of members of a society hampers social development.
According of my opinion, Plato’s text can be associated with happiness. I think Plato narrated symbolically the dilemma of salvation where prisoners are being deprived of human rights which is regarded as being deprived of happiness. Moreover, Plato detailed the torturous long lives of prisoners from which I can picture an image of an ignorant culture. Another way of earning happiness by being knowledgeable. Further, these prisoners never had any lifetime experiences which made them more ignorant. In other word, happiness is obtained by feelings but prisoners from the allegory of cave cannot express and share feelings with each other. As they were stuck in the cave, they did not have opportunity  to enjoy the beauty of nature. Natural beauty gives us revived mind and heart in order to gain happiness. However, I can consider that to be a part of society such as having family and friends is the key term of happiness which prisoners did not have. In fact, being productive for own nation brings happiness but prisoner’s lifestyle does not support this notion.
In conclusion, Freud and Plato argued to determine the certain clarification of reality. Even though both of the writers used metaphors in order to identify social problems and  solve these problems, they also correlated their issues with happiness.
