Digital Essay
As you all know, I did my digital essay project on “The Electric Slide Boogie” by Audre Lorde. The theme is a basic precept
that states “when you fall, get back up, and keep moving forward.” I fleshed this theme out by creating a scenario where I’m seemingly at the end of my line, but then after doing some thinking about the situation, realize that once you hit rock bottom, the only way left to go is back up. I supplemented this realization with the various texts scattered throughout the video along with a transition from grey scale to color. Another transition which i have made here is a shift in music. My first song is entitled “Vocalise OP.34, No.14.” by Hakase Taro & Kadokura Satoshi, and is seemingly an embodiment for melancholy, regret and despair. The second song is “Overflowing Emotions, Reunion” by Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura, and Motoo Fujiwara, which goes from soft and slow in the beginning to grand yet mellow at the end. With regards to Windows Movie Maker, I feel that it has a very simple interface that makes issues such as timing a snap. Unfortunately however, I feel like because of it’s simplicity, doing anything complicated in WMM would be a nearly impossible task. But anyway, without further ado, here is my digital essay.

Digital Essay, Whiskey in Heaven
This was a fun project to do and i enjoyed it. My poem is All the Whiskey in Heaven by Charles Bernstein, he likes to joke around a lot and he used this poem to make fun of other poets, i took advantage of all of his readings of this poem and i created a video based on that, i have pictures of stereotypical love poems and then him reading his own poem and him reading how he thinks a poem should be, together i think i created a very powerful video. The songs all seem to fit and i love listening to them. Overall it was very fun to do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4E6iB7VHFw

Digital Essay!
Hello everyone! So, I finally completed my digital essay and I’m so happy with the results. I had so much fun doing this project and my friend came over and helped me a lot. She was my camera lady and my critic. 🙂 Now, the poem I chose to write about was “The last bit of light made its way on” by Joshua Beckman, the same guy who wrote “The Karate Chop of Love” (which I try to watch at least once a week). Beckman loves Stein and I love Stein, so I mainly wrote about the influence Stein has on Beckman, because he uses repetition in a lot of his poems, and there’s a quote by Stein that I put in the video and in my essay that I believe Beckman follows very well when he writes. So, it should come to no surprise that my video revolves around Stein, but I did incorporate a little bit of Beckman into it (I wrote my own, silly poem using Stein’s beliefs of what poetry should be. The poem I make in the video is “modern” and the line “The hot, masculine sun” is actually from one of Beckman’s poems).
Also, the beginning of the video shows what a dictionary would call poetry vs. what Stein says poetry should be because both of the definitions are very different. The dictionary has a more narrow-minded view on what poetry is, while Stein’s idea allows for a more free way of writing, but you must pay attention to your nouns. It is through the way we giving meaning to nouns that our ideas and feelings are voiced, and that is what poets do with poetry. I also know that a lot of people are confused by Stein’s repetition and just her purpose with that in general, so I touched on that on my paper and in the video briefly with a quote from her. It’s funny, because as I was making the video, I noticed more things about Beckman and Stein than I hadn’t before, and I wish I would’ve noticed them beforehand to make my paper stronger. So, this digital essay does help when it comes to trying to understand just exactly what you were writing in your paper. Overall, I felt that Stein was just trying to say, “Hey! Do you! Write whatever you want, there are no set rules for poetry..but it’s all about how you treat your nouns.” ..and in doing so, poetry becomes colorful and full of life because it connects with readers. Imagine reading a poem that rhymes every line and doesn’t even get you thinking? Even if you don’t like Stein’s poems..she gets you thinking ~geez, why does she use repetition? What is she talking about?~ while I’m in a corner going ~This woman is brilliant, I need more~
Stein isn’t into rules, and I found out she hates commas actually, haha. I hope this all translates well into my video and I hope you guys enjoy it, because I enjoyed the process of making it…and I think it’s kind of funny 🙂
Well! Enough of that, here it is!!

Digital Essay
So, finally done with my digital essay. I found Windows Movie Maker quite self-intuitive to use. At first, I thought that 2:19 is too short for the background music, but at the time, I didn’t know how to forcibly loop the music. In the end though, I felt the song was long enough at around 2 1/2 minutes. I chose to switch my song from “Asia” which was sounds too “Chinese” to 傀儡の騎兵 (which roughly translates into Puppet’s Calvary in both Chinese and Japanese). Both the title and instrumentals of the song sounded fitting enough for my digital essay (Puppets denoting the relatively powerless role a soldier has in the war machine, as he is a vital cog, w/o him, we cannot fight, but he has little control over his own destiny). The sketching of those 5 pictures was also quite enjoyable as I was able to do something I haven’t done for almost 3 years.

Digital Essay- Inescapable Fear
The poem that I chose to reflect upon in my digital essay is “Fear” by Raymond Carver. When making this video my aim was to depict an example of fear being instilled on a person by the media. I titled it “Inescapable Fear” because I view fear as something that continuously affects someone due to the environment they live in. The fear that was instilled in the actor was the fear of alcohol abuse. The commercial that she views on television only leads her into distress since she is uncertain about making a change in her life. Along with the specific situation of the actor, I picked a song that seemed to enhance the feeling of fear itself.

Digital Essay Tools.
I know that ALOT of people including myself had a pretty hard time finding some software to use or understanding some software. I guess I got a bit of a insight on some sites when I went to Alan Levine’s workshop. For those of who didn’t go, you bascially missed out because he showed alot of websites in which you can make videos with music and they looked pretty easy. So I wanted so share his site for those of who can’t find a program to use, this is the tools link to Alan Levine’s wiki, it has links to a bunch of tools with descriptions about them and some samples of how what the tool does.

I hope this helps some people who can’t learn or get a good software.
Digital Essay
This is the video for my digital essay. The essay was on the song “War”, by Bob Marley and the Wailers. I used a song by Bob’s son Damian and footage from WWII, till present day war footage in Iraq, finishing with images of peaceful leaders of our time who were able to make change without violence. The thesis of this essay is that nothing has changed over the last 100 years. We still have wars, and corruption. But the lesson to keep in mind is that there have been people who have made big changes through peace, and if we want to evoke change now, everyone needs to wake up, stop fighting and clean up their own little area of the globe. Anarchy media did not recognize my vimeo URL so that is why there is no thumb nail.
