Greetings & Creativity – Response

I feel that I’m able to be creative pretty often especially when I’m doodling in class or daydreaming. But then again it’s creativity that only I see most of the time and something I don’t really show to anyone else. Another opportunity I get to be creative is when professors assign papers or projects because it still requires me to use my creativity to imagine and think about what my paper/project will look like or to have an idea for it so I have something to start on.
One thing I noticed about “Education and the Changing World of Work” video is that the speaker keeps talking about how important the “left-brain world” was and how much more the “right brain” matters now and how it is more important that the left. I somewhat disagree on this, I think both brains are equally as important and that there should be no time frame in which one part of the brain is more important than the other; they are part of the same important organ. Daniel Pink says that the right brain abilities now matter more. Sure the right brain lets people think of new an creative ideas that no one has ever though of. To make that idea work one must use the left brain’s logic, analytical skills and facts to make sure it’ll work. For example car concepts, people who designs cars first use there right brain to form concept with their creativity but in the end it’s the left brain that makes sure if this concept will work and will not cause any injuries.
Pink also talks about education, though I don’t really pay attention to education policies. I feel that the education system should give children more opportunities to use their creativity and not stress children out with so many facts. From what I remember only in Pre-K up to 2nd grade I had a lot of opportunities to use my creativity. After it was all math, English and history and exams on these topics, not much creativity use for the three.
Lastly, “living with ambiguity” is something I can endure because I believe in life there is a lot of ambiguity. This does not necessary mean I like it. I feel that it is okay to not know something from time to time. An example of ambiguity that I’m okay with is cliffhangers they always make me want to know more and it bothers me the author just leaves the readers off like that. Even so I feel that with this ambiguity it fuels our creativity and lets us create our own ideas from that situation. I do not find it exciting to be confused because I don’t understand how am I suppose to be excited about something I don’t understand?

Not Feeling Creative Enough to Come Up With A Creative Title :D

I feel like I am able to be creative everyday but what the creativity is applying to is what matters. Creativity to me is not just thinking of things and using my imagination to create something out of the blue but also analyzing a specific situation and using what is presented in front of me to create new thoughts of my own and how I choose to analyze what the next step is. Each of us are creative in our own right every day because we see the world through our own eyes and we have to think about what we are going to do with this input of information. Creativity sometimes just comes out on its own when you have that spark of an idea that just pops into your head like an “ahah!” moment. You may try to be creative by seeing how other people do things and then try to come up with your own approach in figuring out the same answer or solution. Creativity may also just come from a random moment when images start forming in your head and they begin building themselves into a bigger picture. Creativity makes itself apparent throughout every day of your life because it’s that unexpectedness even to yourself that makes something special come alive. You didn’t think that you had it in you but once it’s brought to fruition, you can be proud of the fact that your creativity is unlike any other person’s.

I think sometimes I feel comfortable living in ambiguity because it allows you to interpret the situation in your own terms and how it applies to your own life. You can’t know every detail about every piece of information that is in the world because your brain might turn to mush but this gives you the opportunity to keep exploring and thinking of alternative scenarios which can be creative. I feel that it is okay not to understand something from time to time because that allows me to try to come up with an answer or explanation on my own and also discuss with others what they think about it. This exchange of thoughts and opinions helps all of us gain new perspectives so that even though we may not have thought of that before and may not agree with it, we can understand that there are other arguments in how to interpret the facts presented in front of us. Sometimes it is kind of exciting to be confused because that just gives us greater incentive to figure it out on our own or with the help of others. We have that thirst for education and knowledge because it is embedded within us that we need to know what stuff is about and why it has to be that way. If we understood everything in this vast universe of information, we would all be living boring lives of repeating everything that we know and trying to come up with something new to figure out and discover.

Happiness=Love?

Just putting it out there. How come so many people find happiness directly related to being accepted and loved? And how come every song on the Radio now-a-days is about finding love, or how to ‘get into some bitches pants’, or being rich and famous. Why do people try so hard to fit in, be apart of the norm? It kind of aggravates me to be honest. I find these types of ‘standards of life’ so passé. Since when did life become so boring. Life is meant to be extra ordinary, after all you only live it once right? Even if you are re-incarnated and then become someone else, you’re never going to be who you are right now in this moment ever again.
Live life to the fullest and take as much out of it as you can. At least thats my mentality on things.
“It only ends once, every thing before that is just progress”-Jacob (LOST)

Ps. I don’t know why, but I really got into the whole Blog thing. 🙂

Greetings & Creativity

Hi all,

Greetings from Atlanta, where it is 85 degrees and humid, and I have spent the past two days thinking and talking about education, creativity, writing, and, of course, happiness.

A few links to new things I’ve learned/discovered/heard about:

“Schools kill creativity?”

“Education and the Changing World of Work”

So, my questions to you are…how often do you feel that you are able to be creative? How does that manifest itself? What does it look like?

And, how comfortable do you feel “living with ambiguity”? Do you feel okay not understanding something from time to time? Is it exciting to be confused? Why?

These questions are coming from a talk I just heard a former teacher of mine give–he said that one of the problems with the way education works in America (specifically when thinking about testing and assessment) is that one of the biggest parts of being human and being a “grown up” is that our “lived experience is ambiguous”–but the way that schools work doesn’t seem to reflect that…so, curious to hear your thoughts!

LOST

Hello Students of English. I have recently come across this amazing show, it is called LOST. I don’t think that anyone, including myself, can understand why I am so enamored with this TV show. But I feel as though it is my responsibility to spread the word. I am almost 100% sure that a lot of people on this blog have heard of Netflix, and that a number of you have it. Well Guess what? All Six Seasons and beautiful 114 episodes of LOST are on Netflix!!!!! Great News? I think so. If you have nothing to do over spring break, and you happen to have Netflix, I am asking you, try to start watching LOST. It really is a great show. While it was playing on TV I kept thinking to myself, what is this stupid show that everyone is OBSESSED with, and I had never really bothered to watch it. But a few weeks ago I was bored and i was surfing “watch instantly” on netflix and there it was, LOST Season One. So I thought to myself, “oh, what the hell lets give it a shot”. Thank the Lord that I did, because it has been the best decision i have ever made in my 18 and a half years of life.

Lost is a great show, it has really everything that appeals to every audience. It has a bit of romance, a lot of action, some supernatural things(nothing too crazy though). Not to mention, almost all of the actors are one step past extra ordinary. I know my opinion doesn’t matter. BUT THIS IS THE BEST SHOW MADE IN THE HISTORY OF SHOWS!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘theres always light at the end of the tunnel?’ well this show is pretty much all about that. you’re probably not going to understand unless you watch the final season. But im not ruining anything so don’t worry. and also a lot of ‘ what was meant to happen will happen’ and kismet plays a lot of part in the show. Its about a bunch of people who survive a plane crash and land on a mysterious island and they need to survive. Sort of like “Lord of the Flies” but the grown ups version. And the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 cannot find any way to communicate with the rest of the word and get back home.

Also you meet new characters through out the show so its not boring, and its such a suspenseful show that you keep questioning everything that happens. Everything you think you know about the show is more or less wrong. And you find that out in the end of season 5. Season 5 by far is the best season. Even though im done with watching the show i cannot wait to start watching it again. Also, i am the most unemotional person when it comes to movies, let me tell you this, when i was watching the series Finale(season 6 episode 17 which was a total of one hour and twenty three minutes) i was crying like a baby. Not to mention lastly, that 90% of ththe people who survived the plane crash just happened to be very aesthetically pleasing. (good job jacob, you really know how to pick ’em)(<-you wont understand that joke unless you watch the show, so WATCH IT!)

BEST SHOW EVER <3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Necessary Interdependence — Group 5-

The idea of Necessary Interdependence is the idea that we should rely on people when absolutely need to. Today, people rely on each other too much. In addition, they rely on each other unproductively. This gives rise to too much interdependence. In our new theory, people need to be more autonomous, and start to make simple decisions in life because learning how to make simply decisions in life will give rise to an individual making bigger decisions. There is no perfect “state” in the theory of Necessary Interdependence because as most classmates mentioned “it is impossible never to rely on anything”. Meaning, this world is totally connected through multiply networks, and random arrangements. So whether you live of off the dirt in the soil, or oxygen in the air, you still rely on something to survive. In conclusion, the general premise of this theory is to ONLY rely on people when you need to do so, and start making simply decisions by oneself. (Deon, Sal,Andre, and 2 others<– I dont remember there names..sorry)

Specialization

In this day and age, when the population of our planet exceeds 6 billion, it’s almost impossible NOT to rely or depend on other people. Almost everything you can think of doing involves other people.  Being completely self-reliant in 2011 is impossible, but one can still be independent by finding what he or she is good at and pursuing it.  Specialization is what our global economy thrives on, so in order to be successful and independent, one should specialize in the area of one’s choice, and depend on others who specialize in what they’re best at doing. Because no one person can be a master at every single trade they need for survival, this system is the most efficient. Rely on yourself to do what you do best, and rely on others to do what they can do best for you.

The deliberate dumbing down of America

The stuff I talked about in class today I had read in a number of Jim Marrs books, and it is talked about a lot by Alex Jones on his radio show.  I found this video today on Jesse Ventura’s facebook page, thought it was interesting.

Group 5: Dependent Independence

Dependent Independence:

Preserving ones individuality, while simultaneously accepting help from others when needed.  Knowing where you are and where you are going but allowing networking and technology to help you get there. Everyone can follow their own path, but at the same time everyone needs a little bit of help to get there. That’s dependent independence!  You can’t be susceptible to outside forces that conflict with your own ideals.  Bend but don’t break, be flexible and adaptible.  There are certain ideals you must not give up, but you do need to conform a little bit in order to work with others.
