Deon’s Contact
Hey guys. As I mentioned, it is strongly possible that I may not be attending Baruch for this fall semester and I would like to keep in contact with all of you guys. You can look me up on Facebook my name is Deon Marecheau, you cant miss it. Thank you for such a great semester and good luck with your future endeavors.
Parenting
The poem that I wrote Paper #3 on was Frank O’Hara’s “Ave Maria.” The poem basically encourages “mothers of America” to let their children go to the movies, but the bigger message is that parents should basically loosen up and try not to set such strict rules, restrictions and limitations for their children. I disagree with this mentality–children absolutely must have structure in their loves, otherwise they will not thrive as individuals. In my digital essay, I tried to show different movie/show clips that exhibit instances of bad parenting with children and then I showed adults on shows like Maury and Jerry Springer going crazy and doing outrageous things. The connection I’m trying to make is that these adults were not raised correctly when they were children, and did not have parents keeping a close enough eye on them, which is why they turned out the way they did.
The Importance of Good Parenting
The point I was hoping to get across with the video of Veruca Salt (from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) was that parents who let their children have whatever they want become spoiled brats, and are impossible to deal with unless you give them exactly what they want, when they want it. Later on in life, those children don’t know how to accept the fact that they can’t always have all their wishes granted.
The reason I used the particular portion of the Flintstones clip that I did was because Betty tells Barney: “Barney don’t speak mean to him, reason with him.” That is a perfect example of bad parenting. There’s no reasoning with young children. Maybe you can try reasoning with a 10-year old or a teenager, but it does not work with children younger than that. A parent who reasons with his/her child will simply get taken advantage of, which is seen in the video when Bam Bam grabs Barney’s finger and begins slamming him around.
The rest of the clips I showed, like the ones with the mother and daughter who aspire to be prostitutes and the 42-year-old woman with a 14-year-old husband, were just funny examples of adults who act completely ridiculous because they don’t know any limits–they just don’t know when to stop. I think that, had their parents given them more limitations, they would not have been on the Jerry Springer/Maury shows (assuming the Jerry/Maury shows are even real and not staged, which they kind of seem to be).
The Talk
Sylvia Plath’s “words” is something so personal but yet general. The meaning behind the poem, besides her experiences of tragedies including her father’s death and her realization that death is humanities’ fate, is that words are powerful weapons just like an axe. It can be beneficial or forever haunting; it can keep a fire going or kill zombies.
In the Video, it starts off with Michael waiting for Calvin. He eventually receives a phone call that sounds serious and urgent. Michael then rushes over to the meeting spot. On the way there, he thinks about two things that can happen once he gets there; either Calvin is calling to break up with him, or take the relationship to a new level. These are two possibilities but there are always more, which helps to strengthens my argument. The video ends with them finally meeting. I had the video a silence video with just a few words was to show the endless possibilities words can have.

Unnatural Enemy

My video, titled Unnatural Enemy, is a companion piece to my essay about Anne Waldman’s poem “Manatee/Humanity”. The video title itself is based off of a line from the poem, in which Waldman defines the clear differences between “natural predators” and “unnatural man”. The distinction between the two struck me as important, and that’s what I tried to emphasize in my video.
It would probably be more correct to say that the idea for this video inspired my essay topic, rather than the other way around. Despite its many imperfections, I’m really proud of my digital essay and all the effort that went into creating it. Its purpose was to spread awareness about shark finning, and I felt that because I had such a clear idea of what I wanted to do from the very onset, I was able to convey that message clearly in my work.
This was also the first time I’d ever drawn 221 image frames in a single sitting, or even attempted to animate anything at all, so I feel like that’s probably something to be proud of too. I definitely have a whole lot more appreciation for hand-drawn animations now that I’ve experienced making one of my own.
Land of the “Free”
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/Lf0Pa2qxq8k" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]
Song that is used in the movie is “Mad World” by Gary Jules
Can a country truly be free when a country’s own people is being harassed by its own citizens? The United States is seen as the land of the free and of the people – but is this really the case? I made my video depicting the history of America and all its accomplishments but also showing America’s flaws. In this case, it deals with social injustices such as hate crimes. The United States still has a long way to go before being considered the beacon of freedom, liberty and justice. We should all stand up for the rights of others and stand up for what we believe in. We can change what generations before us could not – stop hate, end social injustice and end inequality. We need to “Let America be America again”.
Digital Essay
As you all know, I did my digital essay project on “The Electric Slide Boogie” by Audre Lorde. The theme is a basic precept
that states “when you fall, get back up, and keep moving forward.” I fleshed this theme out by creating a scenario where I’m seemingly at the end of my line, but then after doing some thinking about the situation, realize that once you hit rock bottom, the only way left to go is back up. I supplemented this realization with the various texts scattered throughout the video along with a transition from grey scale to color. Another transition which i have made here is a shift in music. My first song is entitled “Vocalise OP.34, No.14.” by Hakase Taro & Kadokura Satoshi, and is seemingly an embodiment for melancholy, regret and despair. The second song is “Overflowing Emotions, Reunion” by Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura, and Motoo Fujiwara, which goes from soft and slow in the beginning to grand yet mellow at the end. With regards to Windows Movie Maker, I feel that it has a very simple interface that makes issues such as timing a snap. Unfortunately however, I feel like because of it’s simplicity, doing anything complicated in WMM would be a nearly impossible task. But anyway, without further ado, here is my digital essay.

Digital Essay, Whiskey in Heaven
This was a fun project to do and i enjoyed it. My poem is All the Whiskey in Heaven by Charles Bernstein, he likes to joke around a lot and he used this poem to make fun of other poets, i took advantage of all of his readings of this poem and i created a video based on that, i have pictures of stereotypical love poems and then him reading his own poem and him reading how he thinks a poem should be, together i think i created a very powerful video. The songs all seem to fit and i love listening to them. Overall it was very fun to do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4E6iB7VHFw

Digital Essay
So, finally done with my digital essay. I found Windows Movie Maker quite self-intuitive to use. At first, I thought that 2:19 is too short for the background music, but at the time, I didn’t know how to forcibly loop the music. In the end though, I felt the song was long enough at around 2 1/2 minutes. I chose to switch my song from “Asia” which was sounds too “Chinese” to 傀儡の騎兵 (which roughly translates into Puppet’s Calvary in both Chinese and Japanese). Both the title and instrumentals of the song sounded fitting enough for my digital essay (Puppets denoting the relatively powerless role a soldier has in the war machine, as he is a vital cog, w/o him, we cannot fight, but he has little control over his own destiny). The sketching of those 5 pictures was also quite enjoyable as I was able to do something I haven’t done for almost 3 years.

My video is a bit on the avant-garde side. The overall thesis of my paper was acknowledging how Anne Waldman uses a significant chant-like, mystical tone in her poetry in order to convey her appreciation for the diversity of the female demographic. I attempted to represent my thesis by displaying both video clips and images of what seems like typical female behavior, yet with the combination of digital effects and the audio I chose, I tried to add a mystical twist. It was really difficult for me to try and accurately represent my thoughts through the video in a way that my audience would understand. However, I thorougly enjoyed attacking the task and using my creativity in a intellectually challenging way. I’m genuinely pleased with the overall outcome of my work and hope that even if my audience doesn’t necessarily see my vision, they can learn to appreciate it — as is the case with most works of art.
Digital Essay- Inescapable Fear
The poem that I chose to reflect upon in my digital essay is “Fear” by Raymond Carver. When making this video my aim was to depict an example of fear being instilled on a person by the media. I titled it “Inescapable Fear” because I view fear as something that continuously affects someone due to the environment they live in. The fear that was instilled in the actor was the fear of alcohol abuse. The commercial that she views on television only leads her into distress since she is uncertain about making a change in her life. Along with the specific situation of the actor, I picked a song that seemed to enhance the feeling of fear itself.
