Will Historians Laugh?

One problem that comes with technology is that it can cause a nationwide epidemic.  Ever since the dawn of the internet and websites like Facebook and Twitter and those other social networking sites, people have become too preoccupied with where Angela is on a Friday night or what kind of sandwich Fred is eating to realize that this is information that doesn’t have to be broadcasted.  Yes, the ability to constantly update exactly what you’re doing at any given second of the day is pretty earth shattering, but should it be the American public’s number one priority?

I worry that hundreds of years from now historians will look back on my generation and see that the archives are full of Facebook statuses and tweets that contribute nothing to their time period.  This may be a pessimistic perspective regarding the use of technology, but we are on a slippery slope in exactly this direction.

Obviously, technology can also be used in very beneficial ways to society.  Technology should be a way for historians (in their flying cars and jet-packs) hundreds of years from now to learn about or culture, not wonder what the hell went on during this time.

One Response to Will Historians Laugh?

  1. Not really sure if I’m aloud to do this but I happen to know Fred loves cheese sandwiches. 😉
