Throughout the ages, historical evidence has been painstakingly garnered. From fossils to journals, these historical evidence’s have almost always had a timetable on them. However, the internet does not. The internet is everywhere. Why do you think people say that it is impossible to get rid of a picture once it is uploaded to the internet? Each picture and each document leaves its digital print. Tweeting is no different. People may not realize it, but tweeting is almost like an online journal open to the public. People tweet about where they are going, what they are eating, and what they like to do. From an individual standpoint, this information is worthless. However, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Put together, we can understand society very efficiently. As stated in the document on documenting tweets, looking at all the different types of foods people ate could give a future generation insight into the social preferences of our era. Tweets could identify a country’s feelings towards war as well: are we scared to go to war? Do we want to go to war? Other questions can be answered as well: where did people travel to in 2010? How do people feel about the current president’s policy’s?
Moreover, I believe that new technologies such as the internet have educated the masses much more than in the past. I’m sure everyone remembers their parents saying how they didn’t have google and how they had to read books to gather information. The internet has made information which was previously unavailable to the public now available. For example, wikileaks . This ingenious website has posted top-secret information for the world to see. However, are all these documents real? I am no expert on the matter, but it seems as if the website creator could have altered these documents. What do you think?
