I Meant to Do That

Everyone knows that humans are a very flawed species and with these flaws, come accidents. Some of the greatest discoveries known to man have come through the “accidental discovery.” Without such great discoveries from some of the most famous explorers of history, Christopher Columbus just to name one, the world could potentially be much different than it is today. This holds true not only for America, but especially New York City.

The discoveries of ports and other various staples in New York City have contributed to the overall success and luster of the city itself. Discoveries and accidental findings usually come from the human’s natural need to improve and advance. The fear and curiosity of the unknown leads to anxiety and tension. The South Street Seaport is a great example of New York City using its ports to the fullest. When explorers reached what is know known as New York City, the plethora and practicality of the surrounding waterways proved to be hard to pass up.

Regardless of the tension that immediately arose between the explorers and the Natives, the immense trade potential and profit that could be made through these ports proved to outweigh all. Even though Hudson failed his initial mission of finding a faster route to the East, he succeeded in finding a rich fur-trading position for traders. I bet if we could ask Henry Hudson today, he would say, “I meant to do that.”
