The Role I Was Born For!

Have you ever asked who built the walls that made Wall Street? Or even who cut the roads to make Broadway? It’s a fact that Native Americans were not stable enough for the physical labor that building a new colony required. Along with that, the possibility of them running away to their tribes was strong. Unfortunately, the alternative to the Natives were African Slaves. They were the unaccredited labor force obligated to take on the role of developing the colony of New Amsterdam.

Many white Europeans concept of the world during that time period was that some people were born into their positions in life. They justified it by saying it was “natural” and “God’s Plan.” So society worked where people fit in it. The white Christian men who were wealthy and in control came first , the women who married them followed,  the poor were beneath them, and lastly the slaves ended at the bottom of chain. Slaves were made to create, produce, grow and make up the materials needed to create economic gain for their masters during the 17th and 18th centuries. The dehumanization came into play with that as they became more than the building blocks of the city through the Dutch West Indian Company, but were now owned by more households for people to use them for their own needs. This became so drastic due to the concept of  every man being created equal being an illogical and ludicrous idea!
