As the colonies tried their best to obtain self-government and commercial independence from the British, they were then faced by their ‘higher’ power. Although they made it somehow illegal for the British to have any interference, the British had their own thoughts and ideas in mind. The British then placed the Stamp Act in 1765 which was a direct internal tax on the colonies. “It required revenue stamps, costing a halfpenny to upwards of twenty shillings, licenses, bonds, leases, and other legal documents and commercial papers” (Chudacoff24). The Stamp Act also became very dangerous because stamp distributors did not want to carry out theirduties; they were often attacked.
The Stamp Act was important because it effteced basically everyone in every colony and everything was somewhat based on paper work. Mechants, printers and lawyers were heavily effected because aside from their outside work, everthing was documented on paper and had to be printed. So something that used to be free for them was now becoming taxed and became an expense. This was also important because it shows how the British was still able to have a large amount of control and impact over the colonies in such a little way.
I feel that the stamp act was a significant event that occured. Taxes where a main reason for the American Revolution, it was unjust to the people. Merchants, brides, and towns people where affected by this act. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this argument a 9.
The stamp act was a important event in the history of New York City because it was a primary cause of the American Revolution. The taxation constitued a problem for merchants, well for all those who were affected by it. This argument is rated an 8 on a scale of 1-10
