A Woman in a Man’s Shoes

With events leading up to the American Revolution, qualifying men, from merchants to politicos, rose up to the challenge of debunking the British ideals and structure that had been implemented in the colonies leaving store fronts and other businesses unattended and ultimately threatening the success and advancment of urban cities. This is when the role of women became an important factor of the revolution. With all of their husbands on the war front against the british, women held down businesses and kept prices at a profitable level in order for trade and commerce to continue through the American Revolution. Although these acts didn’t solidify the role of women as citizens in the colonies, the presence of women was recognized making them a vital resource for the success of goals of the colonies (Chudacoff, pg. 29).

I feel that the importance of the role of women during war times, often goes un noticed or under-appreciated. The historical significance of women during the American revolution is one of crucial importance. Although their acts ‘ didnt solidify any position of respect or authority in the communal set up of early urban cities, without the involvement of women in the roles of absent men in government and trade, the success of urban cities during the revolution would have dwindled and eventually lead to the fall of the colonies. Throughout many historical events we see that the salvation of our cause is due to the un noticed or untapped resources that are utilized at a time where hope is on the brink of being lost. Thanks to the  action and regulation of women during war times, America has been lead to victory when at times, without the vital resource of women, we could have been lead to defeat.

  1. Even though men were the main people who participated in wars, women did a lot to help benefit their sides. They cooked, cleaned, gathered food, and were basically medics. They were their to aid and assist anyone who was injured and needed help. This is really important because it helps impact the way the people see the women. The women weren’t allowed to go out on the battle field and fight but they were ready to do their part. Without the help of women the government would not be able to survive fully. I rate this article a 8 out of 10 in importance.

The role of women during the American Revolution has had an immense impact on American history. The women who took command of American industry during the Revolutionary War set an extraordinary example of courage and intellect that inspired the American women who took on America’s industries during World War I, World War II, and continuously inspires American women today. I may be a bit biased, but I’d say the role of women during the American Revolution ranks a 9 on a historical significance scale of 1-10.

  3. Women played a prominent role during the Revolution as they were the ones who kept things together while their men went off to war. Many individuals may see this as unimportant as they weren’t the ones fighting the wars, but their roles required almost as much strength, courage, knowledge and assertiveness that were required for the men to go to war. The women played an undoubtedly significant part in American Revolution, hence, being ranked a 10 for significance… and also because I like females! ^.^

I totally agree with the premise that women played an immensely important role in the revolutionary era. They served as leaders, parents, teachers, shopkeepers, nurses, midwives, butchers, bakers, and even security. They held down their towns and cities while the men were gone fighting the war, and if they had not done so, there probably would not be much to return from war to. I rate this a 10 out of 10 in historical importance. Without the women working in conjunction with the men soldier’s protection to keep the colonies functioning, there might not have been any settled colonies at all.
