New York and the American Revolution” written by Homberger describes the physical change that New York went under after winning the Revolution. During the many battles New York house, streets, landmarks and major cities was burnt down. It wasn’t a city but more of “a neglected place, built chiefly of wood, and in a state of prostration and decay… there was silence and inactivity everywhere ….”(pg10) With President Washington came a new and improve New York. Being known for business the first thing to get done was “rebuilding the disrupted commercial links upon which the city’s prosperity rested.”(pg. 10). Each improvement helps some of the problem New York had before the war such as narrow streets, docks, sewer, and better housing.
The Revolution damage New York in more ways than one but it help transform this city to become the greatest city then and now. The development of Wall St made it home to business such as insurance company and banks “as well as the wealthiest and most fashionable New Yorkers.” (Pg12)
Without the changes that was made I don’t think New York would the city it is today. Washington and the fore fathers show the potential of New York and took they time to develop it the way that they felt was needed economically. And by doing so we gain riches for the city and the nation as a whole. New York could have been left behind last since it was the city that Britain ruled the longest but it wasn’t it was one of the city build in perfection. And today we can stand tall and say we live in one of the best city in the world.
So I neglected your post while I did mine, but it’s fine because I completely agree with what you have to say as well. We can see with the reconstruction of New York, historically, it sparked the emergence of banks, insurance, and other businesses building a home in new venues. This along with the redevelopment of streets like Broadway and Wall Street brought more attraction to the city, and we can see today the attraction to this city is well alive. This post is definitely significant to the changes and improvements after the Revolution and how it sparked an evolution that has made it what is it today, so I rate it a 10.
New York City suffered greatly during the Revolutionary War. Many places were torn down and destroyed. With continuously built up and rebuilt of our structures of life, New York City plus many other cities indeed exchange the past for a brighter future. I give a 10 for the importance of- building a nation.
NYC is known for the city of a billion opportunities. People from other countries have dreams of emigrating here in order to gain a better future for their families and themselves. The transformation of a once decrepit city into a booming economical goldmine deserves a 10.
