There are many reasons to what lead to the American Revolution as Chudacoff describes in his except from “The Evolution of American Urban Society” called “Cities in the American Revolution”. He describes the many events which provided as a stepping-stone for the colonists to resort so upheaval and riots. Acts passed by the British such as the Molasses Act (p. 24), the Stamp Act (p. 24), the Townsend Acts (p. 24), and the Tea Act (p.28) were all attempts by the British parliament to tax the colonists in search of relief from the Seven Years War which left the British nearly dry. If it hadn’t been for these attempts, the colonists would have never rioted and sought independence from the British. These riots gave way to a new democratic way of thinking and allowed leaders like Samuel Adams to spread the idea of boycott throughout the colonies. Chudacoff basically explained the many pre-revolutionary ideas that began to bloom.
I find the except in Chudacoffs book to be very informative and true. From what I understand, the many attempts of the British to tax the colonists were obvious reasons for the colonists to riot. Without these boycotts and resistance, then the American Revolution may not have occured. The significance of these events led to many various riots and disturbances that caused colonial America to take charge and fight for their freedom. It caused African and African Americans to fight for their freedom along with giving the female population a chance to take control over society during the Revolutionary War. Thanks to these riots, we have a unified country which enabled freedom to its inhabitants.
This was one of the biggest factors that led to the American Revolution, which makes it very significant. If the British hadn’t taxed, the revolution might haven’t occurred, or might have occurred at a later time which would change everything as we know it today. I rate this a 6 because it is moderately significant, i believe the revolution would have happened anyway.
The effects of taxing by the British on the colonists was an imperative cause to the Revolution. Rioting and other acts of dissent by the colonist towards the British was a start to what led to the Revolution as well. I do agree with Horowitz, that the Revolution may have occurred in any case, but knowing how long that may of been is something that can not be estimated. The fact that it happened at that point in time makes these events very significant which is why I will give it a 9.
Americans of the time were unfairly taxed which resulted in the riots and other chaotic reactions to their injustice. Whether the revolution would have happened without this specific occurrence does not make this incident insignificant. It was a contributing factor, therefore it should be recognized which is why I give it a 10.
American Revolution never would have happened had the British not taxed the colonists. Many cities revolted against the British particularly because of the high taxes. Had it been a practice that the British began with, it would not have been much of a problem. However to charge high taxes from nothing is big difference! I don’t understand why the King of Great Britain did not think like that before. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give the tax situation a 9.
No doubt that tax acts were one of majors reasons of the American revolution…but there were other reason as well which came together to form a national wave against British. Some of this reason are: Boston massacre which involved a British soldiers, common sense which is one of many pamphlets that was written to inspire colonists to declaration of independence. I can categorize Tax’s factor in this revolution in 8.
The tax was one of the biggest cause of American revolution. Most of the people were against tax , mostly were merchant because they had to pay more taxes. I give tax in this revolution 8.
I agree with the fact that the American revolution probably wouldn’t happen with the heavy taxes that britian was enforcing on the colony. At the time that the taxes was place everything was already hard for the citizen in america so the heavy taxes didn’t help. I agree that this was onr of the main reason why individuals started thinking of theynwoon freedom. Without taxes the United States of America as a nation would of taken longer. So I give this argument a 9 because it played a huge part in our history and how we came to be a nation.
