Assignment due 2/23

Reading: Chudacoff & Smith: read assigned sections; Homberger: read entire download from Readings page; Koeppel: skim chapters 4 and 8, read epilogue carefully; Johnson: read introduction carefully; skim chapter 2 and conclusion
Post: Pick one topic or theme mentioned in the readings so far that is important to explaining change in the city between 1776 and 1860.  It should be something not covered yet by a classmate for this assignment. Write a post illuminating that issue in depth.  In one paragraph, argue why that change is vital to explaining events to follow.  In a second paragraph, identify who was affected by the change and whether it was good or bad for each person or group involved.  Include a visual representation of a primary source (this can be a painting, photograph, or excerpt from a document) and a caption explaining what is useful about the document.  Use your own words, but make reference to at least one of the authors, referring to specific pages in the reading in parentheses.  NOTE: Recommended sources for images: follow links from http://guides.newman.baruch.cuny.edu/aecontent.php?pid=88593

  1. Anita Kamath says:

The Chudacoff & Smith subsection “Servicing the City” is not in the Seventh Edition. What subsection are we supposed to read in the Seventh Edition?

  2. I now have Chudacoff sections up for both the newest, 7th edition (listed up front), and older editions [liste in brackets]. But I had missed that one; thanks for the reminder. I believe the equivalent of “Servicing the City” in chapter two for the 7th edition is “Problems of Growth”. If that section name sounds familiar, that is because the same exact section title appears in chapter one of the 7th edition.

Yes, I have come across that section. Thank you!
