Tyler Anbinder’s “Five Points” describes the city like never before. Illustrating the impact of immigrants on the five points of New York such as on China Town, Abinder is able to identify a declining New York; he is able to show how an increase in immigration had decreased worker income, starting in the mid-1820’s. The following are a list of 3 of the many sources utilized by Tyler Anbinder to further his points and validity:
Source 1: Captain O’Brien to Lieutenant Colonel Jones – This source is a primary source. I would consider this a trustworthy source because there is no reason for anything to be false. However, I would try and decipher the biased opinions; every source, primary or secondary, has some sort of bias to it. This is because we all have opinions.
Source 2: Harpers Weekly – This source is a primary source because it was a newspaper that came out during that time period. I would consider the information reliable because it was coming from a newspaper, but would be wary of bias. For example, Thomas Nast was a prime cartoonist of Harpers Weekly and disliked the government. Therefore, some information could be possibly skewed to view the government poorly.
Source 3: The Tribune – This source is a primary source because it is coming from the 1850 time period that it is talking about. I would consider the information reliable because there was no reason for false and or skewed information. The facts mentioned by the tribune in this case were about the number of people living in the 5 points, and therefore, no bias could possibly be mentioned.
