Tyler Anbinder’s “Five Points” describes the notorious 19th century slum city, of where we live today. The book gives you a understatement perspective of life in the “Five Points.” It illustrates the impact of immigrants in the neighborhood, and how it effects parts of New York City during the 1800’s. Anbinder shows his ideas of how it was back then, and he uses these source to show what has happened.
1. Evening Post – This source is a primary source because it is directly talking about what has happened during that period of time. I would consider the information reliable because the Evening Post was committed daily to provide information about the city, and how dangerous it really was. There was little or no information that had reason to be unrealizable or fake. It was all dated.
2. Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper – This source is a primary source. It provided pictures that was from a person’s point of view that lived during those times. These pictures are very reliable as it gives us a picture of how it was back then. These pictures allow us to see what people were doing, how they lived, and the condition of where they lived.
3. Gilje, Road to Mobocracry – This source is a secondary source. This source is a diary of someone who lived during those times. It gives a great perspective of how the living environment was back then. The source is very reliable, as the diary has already been written. There was no changes to it, but it might be a little bias because it is coming from only one person’s point of view.
Five Points also introduced the clashes of multicultural since it was an areas that contains many immigrants.
I believe the first two sources still considered secondary sources because their information used by the author of “five points”.
Sorry , the sources you have cited are correct , because they are first hand inofmation 🙂
