Books Vs. Websites – The Battle of the Times and Slavery

Both the reading and the website illustrate slavery in different ways. Homberger illustrates who came to New York City, including the roles that these people played in modern society. For example, African Americans were more likely than not slaves. As time went by, slave rebellions occurred (such as by Nat Turner and people in Haiti). However, the rebellions did the opposite of what they were supposed to do; instead of freeing the slaves, the rebellion made the conditions much more difficult. Furthermore, the readings go into how African Americans were abused. Moreover, Chudacoff goes over what happened after the slaved obtained their freedom. The readings made a point to focus on slavery through specific points.

On the other hand, the website goes into specific details about what led up to everything. For example, it goes over every step of how African Americans tried to obtain freedom and how they fought. The website gives specifics such as dates and goes into detail on select African American freedom fighters. Also, the website goes over why slavery was wrong and the racism that existed in New York (even though slaves were free there). The website made a point to focus on slavery in general by going through many different aspect of slavery, including how freedom was obtained.

One Response to Books Vs. Websites – The Battle of the Times and Slavery

  1. I agree with you Jonathan, the website took a neutral point in discussing slavery by ponting out facts and details about the whole process leading up to emancipation.
