Mad? Let’s Riot!

Bernstein, in the New York City Draft Riots, and the website are two sources of information explaining the Draft Riots. The Draft Riots took place in New York City during the Civil War, as angry protestors, primarily Irish, were opposed to the war, which they felt brought hard times in economy, an increase in unemployment, and an increase in competition for jobs, especially against African Americans. The riot lasted for five days, brutally attacking African Americans and those they consider were Republican. Houses were set on fire when suspected of African Americans living or taking refuge in.

The website states that the Draft Riots occurred because of racism and anti-war feelings. However, Bernstein states that the Drift Riots can’t be explained by “one-dimensional” reasons. “It demands a broad and multilayered explanation.” Bernstein does state that the reasons the website uses accounts for important parts of the events. Bernstein attempts to go in-depth with the Draft Riots. The information doesn’t stop at a reason and explanation style, such as what the website uses. Bernstein attempts to uncover the root of the problem, and how it fits in context with ongoing urban change.
