Neutral vs Indepth Look at Slavery

In the website “Slavery in New York”, information about slavery is looked in a neutral manner.  It looks at the occurrences in a historical point of view, without taking sides if it was positive or negative.  To prove this manner, it projects numbers and percentages.  For example, “During the colonial period, 41 percent of the city’s households had slaves, compared to 6 percent in Philadelphia and 2 percent in Boston.”

From "Slavery in New york" This shows how the website had a historical view on slavery instead of a "360" view.

In the readings, the authors choose to look at both at the slave owners and the slaves perspective.  They have personal accounts of anti-slavery from specific people who went through slavery, as show in Horton’s The Hope of Liberty.  In this case, the author wants the reader to relate and empathize with the struggles people had to go through.  Although it is a personal account, the main purpose is to “…illuminate the aspirations of generations of a people struggling for liberty.”

I do agree with how the website was more neutral. It basically wanted you to fully understand what occured before, during and after slavery and it provided you with useful information. I also agree that when you read Horton’s The hope of libery you felt sympathic to what the people had to go through and overcome.

I absolutely agree with this as well. The website was not only boring, it looked like it was directed towards 3rd graders where you would have to sensor what is put on so they can’t see the brevity of the situation. The readings were more in depth and it gave me a perspective I never learned before- especially regarding slavery in NYC.
