Slavery in New York

Going through the online exhibit of Slavery in New York, I  was expecting a long and throughout explanation for each picture. Especially since the slavery in New York were well documented (as we can see from Shane Whites piece Somewhat more Independent.) The information given on the online museum were mostly clear cut facts followed by a small image. The images in the Tour galleries I was a bit confused because I would click on a specific gallery, yet there would only be one image. Overall the website would probably be more of a learning experience for a middle schooler, but not something a college student could draw in detailed facts for a research paper.

In Whites reading, I was able to pick up a lot more information and details about the slavery just in the New York and New Jersey area. White used many different primary sources which allowed white to back up all of his ideas and arguments. He ask questions and answered myths that were stereotypically thought even to this day. Certain myths such as that slavery was not as bad, or slaves were not treated as badly in NY because most of the public was anti-slavery. In his detailed chapter A Mild Slavery? he backs up his arguments with stories and documents that really opened my eyes to the treatment of slaves in New York.

This image really captured the brutality slaves had to go through

One Response to Slavery in New York

  1. I agree with you that the website was alot more brief and direct in delivery, while the readings especially Chudacoff illustrated slavery more even without pictures.
