What A Riot!

The website sight was definitely geared toward the draft riot and the events going on in New York. I learned that the majority of rioters (German and Irish) were extremely unsettled by the draft riot and its implications. Recently arrived, German and Irish immigrants felt they were being cheated. They hated African Americans because they feared their jobs would be taken by newly emancipated slaves and they hated Republican for letting them go. They website seems bias in the way it describes the riots; it justifies them without giving any of the negatives.

On the other hand in Bernstein’s book offers and more formal analysis of the topic of Draft riots, in comparing them to other riots it highlights the draft’s riots senseless violence. Both sources do justify the riots to a certain extent but the book gives you a beginning (the initial draft by Republicans), middle and ending to the dilemma offering a more complete look at the issue allowing you to decide.

Recommendations for the website would more analysis and that about what happens after the riots.

One Response to What A Riot!

  1. i believe riots were a huge part of history. They were ways people made money , received food , brought attention and resembled lifestyles. I believe in each riot there was a reason behind it and therefore realize that riots were a big part of history.
