The ferries were a restricted form of transportation, as only cities with ports could use them. “The obvious solution was the establishment of ground transportation in urban areas” (Jackson Pg 33). Prior to the subway, cable car, steam train and omnibus there was the stage coach. “The idea originated in France and first appeared in the United states in 1827” (Chudacoff Pg 84) . These stagecoaches were horse-drawn carriages used for long distance travel while hackneys and taxis were used for shorter distances.
Abraham Brower started the use of stage coaches in 1827 when he first rode them down Broadway in Manhattan. He charged a fare of a shilling i.e twelve and a half cents. The stage coaches were not so efficient and could not carry as many passengers but they gave way to newer forms of transportation. There were eight omnibuses in New York by 1833, these omnibuses were a more advanced version of the stagecoaches as they could carry more people over longer distances
