Chudacoff takes a very different view point when he analyzes the immigration. He focuses on the late 19th century and early 20th. He analyzes the impact immigration has as a whole, how the large amount of immigrants impacted the level of competition for decent jobs. Another impact of immigrants were poor housing and styles of life. He doesn’t focus much on the topic of slaves or the emancipation he focuses on the lives of Africans that arrived in America and what their lives were like.
Binder divides the immigration in to separate parts. He focused on how certain ethnicities such as blacks survived and their new lifestyle. He mentions that due to the fact no housing laws were passed for African Americans, they continued to suffer from quickly spreading diseases. Binder focused on the difference between ethnicities and races .
As well as talking about how ethnicities survived, Binder also spends a lot of time talking about who was immigrating and why. There were many difference periods of time where different cultures were moving in. Binder mentions that the years from 1815 through 1880 were labeled as Old Immigration which was the immigration of predominately Eastern and Western Europe. Binder, like Chudacoff also takes time to talk about how this vast immigration rate had a big effect on employment. Although the population back then were nothing compared to the population now, it was a big problem thus eventually resulting in riots.
